Are you passionate about improving and developing the pharmacy service to optimise patient care whilst pursuing an interest in medicines information? If so, we are looking for passionate, creative, motivated and patient focused pharmacists to join our team.

University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL) comprises three acute teaching hospitals, serving over a million residents of Leicestershire and Rutland, and providing tertiary services on a national level. You will be working within the regional Medicines Information service and participating in the delivery of our clinical pharmacy service.

The roles advertised will be a 50:50 split with the following specialties: Respiratory, Renal, Cardiology and Vascular.

Main duties of the job

• Participate in the delivery of optimum pharmaceutical care to patients served by the clinical directorate on specified ward(s)/clinics, providing a level of clinical input commensurate with the grade.
• Prescribe and review medication for therapeutic effectiveness, appropriate to patient needs, and in accordance with evidence-based practice, national and practice protocols, and within scope of practice.
• Provide expert evaluated medicines information and advice in response to complex enquiries where answers may not be available, promoting the safe, effective and economic use of medicinal products and optimising individual patient therapy.
• Contribute to the management of the patient helpline to answer medicines-related queries.
• Actively pursue audit, research and development within CMG and the department, publicising the results through presentations and publications.
• Assist with the training and development of staff.

Medicines Information (MI) role duties

• Provide and supervise the day-to-day operational aspects of the Midlands (Leicestershire) Medicines Information Service.
• Support members of the healthcare professions in primary and secondary care to ensure the safe, effective and economic use of medicinal products through proactive and reactive provision of evaluated, accurate and up-to-date information and advice.
• Provide expert specialist advice on drugs in lactation as part of the UK Drugs in Lactation Advisory Service.
• Assist in the provision of the medicines helpline service to selected specialty areas for discharged patients.
• Help train others (qualified pharmacists and trainees) in the specialty of Medicines Information.

Person Specification

Training & Qualifications

• Master's degree (or equivalent) in pharmacy.
• Pharmacist registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
• Postgraduate certificate in Clinical Pharmacy / Pharmacy practice or evidence of equivalent clinical experience.
• Working towards completion of a Postgraduate Diploma/MSc in Clinical Pharmacy/Pharmacy practice.
• Evidence of post‑registration commitment to continuing professional development.
• Registered as an Independent Prescriber or ability to complete training upon appointment.
• Evidence of leadership training and skills, particularly change management.
• Membership of a professional body (e.g., MRPharmS, UKCPA or equivalent specialist group).
• Evidence of practice research projects undertaken.

Knowledge

• Sound current clinical knowledge.
• Awareness of national issues.
• Clinical governance.
• Knowledge of patients’ own drug (POD) and self‑medication schemes.
• Evidence of teaching undergraduate, postgraduate, doctors, nurses, pharmacists.
• Communication skills sufficient to undertake commitments.

Skills

• Evidence of communication skills, verbal and written; good interpersonal skills.

• Able to supervise other pharmacists.

Experience

• Approaching 2 years (minimum) post‑registration experience in pharmacy practice with relevant clinical experience.
• Experience of on‑call ability to deal with calls out of hours.
• Evidence of achievement in the capacity of clinical/ward pharmacist.
• Experience of teaching/tutoring.
• Experience of working in hospital.
