Main duties of the job
- Participate in the delivery of optimum pharmaceutical care to patients served by the clinical directorate on specified wards/clinics; deliver a level of clinical input commensurate with the grade.
- Prescribe and review medication for therapeutic effectiveness, appropriate to patient needs and in accordance with evidence‑based practice, national and practice protocols, and within scope of practice.
- Actively pursue audit, research and development within the CMG and the department, and publicise the results through presentations and publications.
- Assist with the training and development of staff.
Job responsibilities
Emergency and Specialist Medicine (ESM)
Work within the multidisciplinary team providing pharmacy services to clinical areas including Emergency Medicine, Neurology, Stroke, Geriatrics, Diabetes, Endocrinology, Infectious Diseases, Rheumatology and Dermatology. Support the busy Emergency Department, Acute Medical Unit, Acute Ambulatory Care, Short Stay Unit, Acute Care Medical HDU, Acute Frailty Units and Frailty Emergency Squad.
Education and Training responsibilities
- Assist in the induction planning and oversight for trainee and foundation pharmacists (update rotas, complete checklists, plan competency assessments).
- Provide ongoing support for foundation pharmacists (ward assessments, case‑based discussions, presentations).
- Assist in planning, delivery and quality assurance of university placement programmes and other training sessions.
- Provide ad‑hoc support within the E&T team, line‑management responsibilities and support line managers of staff in training posts.
- Contribute to evening, on‑call and weekend rotas.
Person Specification
Training & Qualifications
- Master's degree (or equivalent) in pharmacy.
- Pharmacist registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
- Post‑graduate certificate in Clinical Pharmacy / Pharmacy practice or equivalent clinical experience.
- Working towards a Post‑graduate Diploma/MSc in Clinical Pharmacy or Pharmacy practice.
- Evidence of leadership training and change‑management skills.
- Registered Independent Prescriber.
- Membership of a professional body (e.g., MRPharmS or UKCPA).
- Evidence of practice research projects.
Knowledge
- Sound current clinical knowledge.
- Commitment to continuing professional development post‑registration.
- Awareness of national issues and clinical governance.
- Knowledge of patients' own drug (POD) and self‑medication schemes.
- Experience in teaching undergraduates, post‑graduates, doctors, nurses, pharmacists.
- Communication skills at a level sufficient for commitment.
Experience
- Approaching 2 years (minimum) post‑registration experience in pharmacy practice with relevant clinical experience.
- Experience working in hospitals and medicines information (as trainee or qualified pharmacist).
- Achievement as a clinical/ward pharmacist.
- Experience of on‑call availability.

- Able to supervise other pharmacists and manage staff.
- Good time‑management skills for self and others.
