Full‑time HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist with demonstrable Histology experience required. Candidates must hold the IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Histopathology or be willing to study for it.

Main duties of the job include working in all laboratory areas: specimen reception, dissection, section production, primary diagnostic, immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy, and enzyme histochemistry. The role involves prioritising tasks, working independently, communicating clearly, and working accurately and efficiently under pressure. A voluntary out‑of‑hours technical on‑call service operates.

Job responsibilities

• Carry out all laboratory analyses, including reporting results, maintaining records and documentation.
• Undertake specialised analytical work in designated areas.
• Participate in departmental rosters as required.
• Perform quality control procedures, examine results, identify poor performance, and implement appropriate action.
• Take delegated responsibility for the quality control, operation, routine maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment.
• Assist with the production, maintenance and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures.
• Provide advice to colleagues or clinicians regarding sample or assay appropriateness.

Physical Skills

• Requires highly developed physical skills including accurate eye‑to‑hand coordination.
• Ability to maintain prolonged concentration for specific tasks such as microscopy.

• Ability to participate in out‑of‑hours roster and/or other flexible working arrangements.

Training & Qualifications

• State‑Registered BMS (HCPC); has completed the IBMS Specialist Portfolio or equivalent; knowledge of specialist discipline to postgraduate diploma level or equivalent acquired via short courses and ongoing specialist training.
• Demonstrates a commitment to continuing education and training.
• Biomedical Science degree.
• Demonstrates knowledge of instrumentation.
• Shows awareness of method development and new technologies.

Experience

• Demonstrates ability to organise own work effectively.
• Keyboard skills and computer literacy.
• Competency in appropriate Pathology laboratory techniques.
• Diagnostic laboratory experience of at least 2 years post‑State Registration.

Salary: £39,959 to £48,117 a year (pro rata for part‑time). Training annex if appointed.
