University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust – Retail Catering Assistant (Retail Food and Beverage, LRI) – closing date: 09 July 2026. The retail catering service provides a high-quality service to staff and visitors. As a Retail Catering Assistant you will be an active member of our team, delivering excellent customer service in our busy restaurants. We seek team members who are enthusiastic, eager to learn and develop. Previous experience is desirable but not essential; full training will be provided. Barista knowledge is desirable. Positive communication skills (written and oral) are essential, and a drive to deliver the best possible service in a busy, pressurised environment is required. Flexibility to work a varied shift pattern, including weekends and flexible hours, is also required.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Adhere to good customer service standards.
  • Handle cash and operate tills.
  • Maintain good hygiene practices within the department.
  • Prepare drinks and snacks to brand standards.
  • Prepare food as required in the main production kitchen.
  • Ensure that foods are checked for suitability for special diets.
  • Work within chilled areas and in wet environments.
  • Accurately record and monitor temperatures to required frequencies.
  • Wash crockery, cutlery and catering utensils using industrial machines, and manually when required.
  • Ensure high standards of cleanliness throughout the work area, adhering to Trust policies and procedures.
  • Carry out cleaning tasks, both specific and generic, to prescribed work schedules in line with Trust policies and procedures.
  • Use materials, provisions and equipment economically, and seek advice from a supervisor when in doubt.
  • Report any mechanical defects, equipment issues or untoward incidents to your team leader.

Person Specification

  • Able to carry out instructions and duties as detailed in the job description.
  • Willingness to work towards achieving CIEH Level 2 in Food Safety and NVQ Level 2 (or equivalent) in support services and customer care.
  • Previous experience of working within a healthcare environment.
  • Catering experience.
  • CIEH Level 2 in Food Safety.
  • NVQ Level 2 – support services, customer care.

  • Able to work in a busy environment.

Skills

  • Good command of the English language, written and oral.
  • Ability to work as a team member or on own initiative.
