The Apprentice will provide a high‑quality reception and support service within the Respiratory Biomedical Research Centre, based at Glenfield Hospital. The role requires excellent communication with patients, relatives, the public and a wide range of multi‑professional staff. A versatile approach and the ability to cope with several tasks simultaneously are essential.
Responsibilities include:
- Ensuring the correct and timely input of patient information onto departmental computer systems, following Trust policies on data collection and confidentiality.
- Maintaining a professional, helpful, and friendly manner as the first point of contact for all visitors.
- Undertaking and completing a development programme leading to a National Standard/Framework within agreed timescales.
- Actively participating in personal development plans with line manager and training provider.
- Providing support to all staff and visitors to the Respiratory Biomedical Research Centre.
- Giving up‑to‑date information and advice to patients, colleagues, other departments, external organisations and the general public where necessary.
- Under supervision, undertaking reception duties, prioritising and arranging appointments using various appointment systems.
- Dealing with patients and staff enquiries in person or by telephone in a courteous and confidential manner, providing assistance as required.
- Ensuring patient safety and well‑being in the waiting area and alerting appropriate staff to any concerns.

Job responsibilities include:
- Communicating effectively with all visitors face to face, in writing or by telephone.
- Obtaining and preparing notes in readiness for clinics, investigations or at the request of staff within the Department.
- Maintaining a record of the transfer of notes to and from the Department using the appropriate UHL systems.
- Liaising with secretaries and other departments within the Trust, and external stakeholders as necessary.
- Providing information and/or advice where appropriate or referring onto other staff members where necessary.
- Arranging hospital transport for patients attending the department in accordance with Trust policy.
- Ensuring accurate record keeping and updating of information and systems as appropriate within the scope of the position.
- Ensuring that confidentiality for both patients and staff is always maintained in accordance with the Data Protection Act.
- Organising collection and delivery of internal and external post daily and its distribution to staff within the department.
- Updating noticeboards, NIHR Leicester BRC Respiratory contact list and circulating emails.
- Any other duties as appropriate and determined by the Line Manager.

Training & Qualifications:
- Maths and English GCSE level grade F – A* or GCSE grade 1 – 9 or Functional Skills at level 1 or above.

Salary: £14,722 a year (£7.55 – £12.21 Hourly / >£270 per week up to NMW, £8.00 per hour from 01 April 2026)
