This new role involves working within the research delivery and project support team of the Cardiovascular Research Department. The team is responsible for the set‑up and delivery of research studies within Cardiology, Vascular and Cardiac Surgery specialities. The post holder will project manage multiple studies and work closely with the clinical delivery team, project support team and other staff to ensure studies are set up quickly, completed on time, to target, within budget and in line with regulatory requirements and good clinical practice. The role spans tasks from feasibility through study set‑up to data‑lock and includes study finance responsibilities.

Main duties of the job

  • The post holder will work closely with senior research nurses and the Cardiovascular Research Manager to report progress and recruitment status to senior staff including Principal Investigators and the Cardiovascular Research Operations Director; troubleshoot and develop recovery plans where studies are not running as planned.
  • The post holder will delegate trial‑specific tasks to the project team (research governance administrators, other administrators and service delivery personnel), train and develop these staff members, monitor their progress and implement remedial actions when required.

Job responsibilities

  • Work across all UHL sites as required; liaise with sponsors, contract research organisations, the Clinical Research Network and other external organisations.
  • Occasionally undertake flexible working arrangements, including early/late shifts, occasional weekends and national meetings.
  • Develop, implement and maintain efficient research management processes to support trial management and reporting.
  • Work with the Research Delivery Team to record expenditures accurately, support invoicing of sponsors and keep spending within budget.
  • Line‑manage junior staff, addressing performance, attendance, sickness absence, training and appraisal in line with Trust policy.
  • Adhere to all Trust and sponsor policies, research governance, information governance, data protection, Good Clinical Practice and study‑specific SOPs.
  • Communicate transparently and effectively with stakeholders.
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with the CV Research Manager, CV Research Operations Director, Senior Research Nurses, department clinical team, study sponsors/contract research organisations, clinical trials pharmacists and Clinical Research Network East Midlands.

Person Specification

Training and Qualifications

  • Degree or equivalent qualification in a science or health‑related discipline, or a degree with experience in clinical trials.
  • Experience in a supervisory or management role.
  • Good Clinical Practice certificate.
  • Project Management qualification.
  • Higher degree (e.g., MSc) in clinical trials or a health‑related discipline (desirable).

Experience

  • Experience running and/or managing clinical research studies/trials.
  • Experience working in a large, complex multi‑professional organisation.
  • Knowledge of national/local research approval processes (HRA, MHRA) and site capacity/capability requirements.
  • Knowledge of research governance principles.
  • Experience with electronic data capture (eCRF) systems.
  • Experience with commercial clinical trials.
  • Previous NHS experience.
