An exciting opportunity has arisen for dynamic and innovative Maintenance Shift Technicians with Electrical or Mechanical background to join University Hospitals of Leicester. The core duty of the role is to carry out planned and reactive maintenance tasks to a high standard that is commensurate with the skills and experience for the role, to ensure the efficient and effective operation and maintenance of environmental engineering plant, equipment and other engineering systems including heating, air conditioning, fire alarms and specialist healthcare equipment; diagnosing and repairing faults in mechanical and electrical devices and control systems.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide a comprehensive healthcare engineering maintenance service to all wards and departments, ensuring compliance with Trust safety standards and procedures.
  • Carry out planned and reactive maintenance tasks on heating, air conditioning, refrigeration, voltage systems, steam raising plant, medical gas systems, nurse call systems, fire detection, building services controls, standby generators and specialist healthcare equipment.
  • Act independently, supporting the Estates Supervisor and Maintenance Managers in day‑to‑day service management and contractor coordination.
  • Work a rotating shift pattern (4 on 4 off) and provide emergency out‑of‑hours on‑call support.
  • Maintain strong communication with Trust staff, estates staff and external agencies; liaise with area users to organise shutdowns of critical patient support systems.
  • Use the Trust Facilities Management System to allocate PPM and reactive work requests, record, update and audit estates records, and prepare technical reports.
  • Perform fault diagnosis and repair on complex mechanical and electrical systems, including BEMS, control systems, steam raising boiler plant and associated control systems.
  • Respond to building management system alarms (fire, lift, medical gas, boiler) and use BMS for first‑line plant fault diagnosis.
  • Participate in on‑call/shift rotas and be prepared for emergency work outside normal hours.
  • Act as a team leader when required, managing resources, supervising and organizing estates work and ensuring compliance with safety policies.

Person Specification

Training & Qualifications

  • Good general education, GCSE grades A‑C or equivalent.
  • Relevant City & Guilds Level 3 in an Electrical discipline.
  • HNC or equivalent experience, or willingness to work towards an HNC.
  • PASMA – Mobile Access Tower User.
  • Completed a recognised Apprenticeship.
  • HND in an Electrical/Mechanical discipline.
  • Competent or Authorised Person HTM.

  • Ability to fault‑find, diagnose and rectify mechanical and electrical systems using relevant tools and drawings.
  • Ability to cope with demanding and stressful scenarios.

Experience

  • A recognised apprenticeship in Electrical discipline.
  • Good knowledge of mechanical, electrical and electronic systems within healthcare building engineering.

  • Knowledge of BEMS and control systems.
  • Understanding of steam raising boiler plant and associated control systems.
