Maintenance Assistant

The University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust Estates & Facilities are looking to recruit a Maintenance Assistant who has a good understanding of building, electrical and plumbing maintenance.

This is an opportunity to become part of a team that maintains key engineering services at the Leicester General Hospital and Glenfield Hospital.

Ideally you should have a basic building engineering qualification and experience of working in a maintenance environment, demonstrating versatility and flexibility.

Main duties of the job

  • Assist Maintenance Craftsperson (in all disciplines) under the supervision of the Maintenance Craftsperson.
  • Undertake unsupervised routine maintenance and minor repair work that does not require a fully qualified craftsman, based on training and/or experience.
  • Assist other trades as required by the Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Use all relevant tools and equipment safely.
  • Maintain workshops, stores, switch‑rooms, boiler‑house and plant‑rooms and surrounding areas clean and tidy as directed.
  • Comply with all statutory regulations, including the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
  • Work overtime and at short notice when available, depending on the needs of the Trust.
  • Assist higher skill grades on new work and reactive calls.
  • Demonstrate a basic knowledge of workshop safety practices.
  • Undertake statutory planned, reactive maintenance tasks and inspections.
  • Participate in training as necessary to maintain and develop skills, meeting current and future service requirements and legislation changes.

Person Specification

Experience

  • Basic understanding of construction, building engineering techniques.
  • Good understanding of tools and equipment used in maintenance activities.
  • Experience of working within a similar environment.
  • Experience of working in an acute or non‑acute hospital environment.
  • Working knowledge of Health and Safety.

  • Good communication skills for effective working relationships throughout the organisation.
