Exciting opportunities have arisen for dynamic, motivated and experienced Paediatric Intensive Care Nurses to work within our expanding team of Nursing, Medical and other Health Care Professionals. We are a busy and leading tertiary unit providing expert care for critically ill children. Cardiac PICU (cPICU) is part of the East Midlands Congenital Heart Centre (EMCHC) and cares for children within the East Midlands and nationwide who require surgical management of complex heart problems and is home to the first ECMO unit in the country.

Main duties of the job:

  • Responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of programmes of evidence‑based nursing care to a group of patients.
  • Leadership and supervision of others carrying out all aspects of the caring process.
  • Deputise and take charge of the given area regularly in the absence of the Ward/Unit Manager.
  • Actively contribute to setting and maintaining high standards of quality nursing care.
  • Participate in the effective clinical leadership and management of the ward team.
  • Act as a role model, mentoring, teaching, assessing and supporting students and learners on placement.

Job responsibilities:

  • Delivery of effective health care within the organisation.
  • Responsible for the allocation of patients to nursing staff and the delegation of duties and care priorities to the multi‑disciplinary team.
  • Provide advice, education, support and information to patients and their relatives/carers.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication with patients and relatives/carers.
  • Recognise, prioritise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations.
  • Ensure that fully accurate, complete and contemporaneous nursing records are written and maintained for each patient.
  • Actively participate in the development and implementation of new ways of working.

Continuing education, professional and personal development:

  • Undertake the Trust Corporate and CMG specific induction and competency programmes appropriate to role.
  • Ensure own compliance and compliance of others with regard to mandatory training and NMC professional re‑registration requirements.
  • Act as a clinical expert and use own knowledge to develop and enhance the development, skills and competence of others.
  • Actively promote and participate in clinical supervision/mentorship or equivalent support mechanisms.

Clinical Governance, reduction of risk, audit and research:

  • Ensure that the delivery of care meets the standards determined by the Ward/Unit Manager.
  • Share responsibility with the Ward/Unit Manager to ensure that the highest standards of infection prevention and control are practiced at all times.
  • Contribute to the development of CMG and Trust policies, procedures and clinical guidelines.

Management and use of resources and information:

  • Ensure the effective and efficient use of physical and financial resources.
  • Assist the accountable budget holder for the ward/department to undertake cost containment strategies as appropriate.
  • Ensure confidentiality is maintained at all times.

Maintaining a safe environment and quality:

  • Monitor health, safety and security of self and others and promote best practice in the ward area.
  • Carry out duties in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1971.
  • Actively responsible for the maintenance of a clean and safe environment adhering to infection control policies.

Training & Qualification:

  • Registered Nurse first level.
  • Evidence of post‑registration qualification in Paediatric Critical Care & HDU.
  • Diploma or Degree in nursing or health related subject.

Communication and relationship skills:

  • Effective Communicator and negotiator during complex situations.
  • Good verbal and written skills.

Experience:

  • Relevant experience in Paediatric Intensive Care & HDU.
  • Evidence of innovation and achievements in Clinical Practice.
