We have an exciting opportunity for a full time Consultant to join our established Anaesthetic Department at Glenfield hospital. The Anaesthetic department at Glenfield provides support for Cardiothoracic Surgery, Cardiology, Respiratory Medicine, Vascular surgery, Breast, HPB surgery, major Urology, Renal Transplant services, Nephrology and non‑theatre activities such as Imaging, ECT, Community Dentistry, sedation lists for ERCP, bronchoscopies etc. There are numerous opportunities for peri‑operative medicine as the Trust is embarking on a major POA (pre‑operative assessment) project with plans for a major expansion in high risk and MDT clinics. There is continued support for non‑clinical professional activities both inside and outside the Trust. The successful candidate will contribute to departmental quality improvement activity and the clinical supervision of postgraduate trainees in Anaesthesia.

Main duties of the job

  • Maintain the highest clinical standards in the management of patients.
  • Share responsibility for the day‑to‑day management of patients with colleagues.
  • Promote new ways of working and coordinating care for patients in the community, ensuring services are based on effective and integrated partnerships across the health community.
  • Take part in multidisciplinary case conferences.
  • Supervise, train and appraise junior medical staff.
  • Teach, conduct research and perform administration.
  • Proactively develop the service.
  • Actively participate in departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.

Job responsibilities

  • Provide a safe and efficient anaesthetic service for elective and emergency care, including pre‑operative assessment and peri‑operative care.
  • Provide specialist high‑risk anaesthesia outpatient clinic work.
  • Participate in the General Duties Consultant Anaesthetist non‑resident on‑call rota.
  • Support the Consultant‑delivered Perioperative Medicine Service.
  • Work flexibly to support workload and cover for colleagues' authorised absences.
  • Participate in service development and business planning with other Consultants, the CMG, local GPs and commissioners.
  • Provide professional supervision and management of junior medical staff.
  • Participate in medical audit, the Trust’s Clinical Governance processes and CPD.
  • Manage budgetary responsibilities where appropriate and comply with standing orders.
  • Ensure duties are carried out to the highest possible standard in line with GMC Good Medical Practice.
  • Teach and train junior staff, undergraduate students and other clinical staff groups.
  • Engage in professional continuing medical education and study leave.
  • Complete Trust Corporate and Directorate specific induction and competency programmes.
  • Maintain CPD to revalidate, undergo annual appraisal and keep statutory training up to date.

Person Specification

  • Qualifications
    • MBBS or equivalent.
    • Full GMC Registration.
    • FRCA or equivalent.
    • Fully Accredited for Higher Specialist Training or eligible for inclusion on the Specialist Register within 6 months of interview.
    • CCT/CESR (CP) date within 6 months of interview.
    • Current ALS Certificate.
    • Membership of relevant Specialist Societies or Associations.
  • Experience / Clinical Skills
    • Fully trained in Anaesthesia.
    • Excellent clinical skills and experience to meet all aspects of the Job Plan.
    • Clear, logical, analytical thinking.
    • Extensive relevant experience in thoracic surgery.
    • Experience managing cardiothoracic trauma and acute airway problems.
    • Evidence of clinical or research commitment and a relevant specialty interest.
  • Management
    • Effective teamwork and supervision of juniors.
    • Leadership experience and awareness of leadership styles.
    • Organise, prioritise and manage clinical workload.
