We are seeking an enthusiastic and forward-thinking substantive Consultant in General and Colorectal Surgery, with a subspecialist interest in Pelvic Floor, to join our team. We seek an individual who is motivated and committed to delivering high standards of patient care, service innovation, education, and clinical governance. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the delivery and continued development of the existing high‑quality elective colorectal service, in addition to supporting the busy emergency service. The successful candidate will join our well‑established multidisciplinary team providing elective and emergency colorectal care to a diverse and multi‑ethnic patient population.

Main duties of the job:

  • Provide high‑quality elective and emergency colorectal surgical care
  • Participate in the Gastrointestinal (GI) Surgery and specialist Colorectal on‑call rota
  • Contribute to colorectal multidisciplinary team meetings and cancer pathways
  • Support the continued development of colorectal surgical services by engagement with colleagues, the Clinical Management Group, wider Trust, GP's and commissioners
  • Supervise and teach resident doctors and surgical trainees
  • Participate in audit, governance, research, and quality improvement activities
  • Work collaboratively with nursing, allied health professionals, and medical colleagues to ensure safe and effective patient care
  • Proactively engage with administration colleagues to support high quality and efficient patient journeys
  • Maintain accurate clinical records and comply with Trust policies and professional standards
  • Respond to Trust requirements for the handling of complaints or investigations
  • Undertake required induction, statutory and mandatory training, appraisal and revalidation

Job responsibilities:

  • Delivery of consultant‑led elective colorectal surgical services across inpatient, outpatient and theatre settings for patients with a broad range of colorectal conditions, ensuring care is delivered to the highest clinical standards.
  • Delivery of a consultant‑led service for patients who present as an emergency to the department of GI surgery at Leicester Royal Infirmary, via the Emergency Department or from General Practice, working alongside consultant colleagues (SDEC, oesophagogastric) to provide timely senior clinical decision‑making for and management of urgent and emergency surgical admissions.
  • Provision of lower GI endoscopy services across main Trust sites and in community hospitals, if appropriate.
  • Regular mandatory participation in weekly colorectal and anal cancer MDT meetings.
  • Close liaison with on‑site Gastroenterology colleagues.
  • Support the education and training of junior medical staff, surgical trainees, and other members of the multidisciplinary team; opportunities to participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes, mentorship and supervision responsibilities.
  • Active engagement in clinical governance activities including audit, morbidity and mortality review, guideline development and quality improvement projects.
  • Participation in research and service innovation, supporting the department's commitment to delivering modern, evidence‑based surgical care.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across surgery, oncology, gastroenterology, radiology, pathology, and specialist nursing teams to maintain and enhance the quality of colorectal services within the Trust.
  • Professional development support and encouragement of service development ideas and specialist interests that complement and enhance the existing colorectal team.

Training & Qualifications:

  • Full GMC Registration, fully accredited for Higher Specialist Training or eligible for inclusion on the Specialist Register within 6 months of interview date
  • Full GMC Registration
  • MB BS/MB ChB or equivalent
  • MRCS or equivalent
  • Current BLS Certification
  • Membership of relevant Specialist Associations
  • Higher degree e.g. MSc, MD or equivalent
  • 6-12 months Post CCT Fellowship in Pelvic Floor

Experience and Clinical skills:

  • Fully trained in General Surgery
  • Fully competent in Emergency General Surgery
  • Fully competent in Colorectal Surgery
  • Subspecialisation in Functional Bowel and Pelvic Floor disorders to provide elective outpatient services and pelvic floor surgery
  • Ability to conduct Colorectal clinics/MDT independently
  • Ability to apply sound clinical judgment to problems
  • Demonstrates clear, logical thinking / analytical approach
  • Willingness to develop clinical skills and experience in area of interest
  • Excellent clinical skills and experience requisite to meeting all aspects of the Job Plan
  • Undertaken a period of specialist pelvic floor training in a nationally recognised pelvic floor centre
  • Evidence of commitment and clear passion in developing the Pelvic Floor Service

Audit and Quality Improvement:

  • Effective participation in and a commitment to clinical audit
  • Participation in a quality improvement programme
  • Experience of quality improvement work and audit
  • Undergone training in teaching and willingness to organise relevant audit activities including quality improvement evidence
  • Completion of formal courses in Audit and quality improvement
  • Published audit including quality improvement

Research:

  • Understanding and interest in research
  • Ability to appraise research critically
  • Ability to supervise juniors undertaking research projects
  • Evidence of recent research and development activity
  • Publications in nationally and internationally recognised peer reviewed journals on subjects relevant to the specialty
  • Evidence of clinical or research commitment to relevant specialty interest

  • Experience and commitment to training/ teaching undergraduate and postgraduate programmes
  • Appraisal and assessment skills
  • Ability to assess clinical competencies
  • Enthusiastic and ability to inspire and lead others

  • Post Graduate qualification in teaching and training
