Consultant Colorectal Surgeon (interest in Abdo Wall Reconstruction)

We are seeking an enthusiastic and forward-thinking consultant in General and Colorectal Surgery, with a subspecialist interest in Abdominal Wall Reconstruction, to join our team. The successful candidate will deliver high-standard patient care, service innovation, education, and clinical governance, supporting both elective and emergency colorectal services and contributing to the delivery and further development of a high-quality elective colorectal service.

Main duties of the job

• Provide high-quality elective and emergency colorectal surgical care.
• Participate in gastrointestinal (GI) surgery and specialist colorectal on-call rota.
• Contribute to colorectal multidisciplinary team meetings and cancer pathways.
• Support the continued development of colorectal surgical services through engagement with colleagues, the Clinical Management Group, wider Trust, GPs and commissioners.
• Supervise and teach resident doctors and surgical trainees.
• Participate in audit, governance, research and quality improvement activities.
• Work collaboratively with nursing, allied health professionals and medical colleagues to ensure safe and effective patient care.
• Engage with administration colleagues to support high-quality and efficient patient journeys.
• Maintain accurate clinical records and comply with Trust policies and professional standards.
• Respond to Trust requirements for the handling of complaints or investigations.
• Undertake required induction, statutory and mandatory training, appraisal and revalidation.

Job responsibilities

• Deliver consultant-led elective colorectal surgical services across inpatient, outpatient and theatre settings for patients with a broad range of colorectal conditions, ensuring care is delivered to the highest clinical standards.
• Provide consultant-led service for patients who present as an emergency, working closely with consultant colleagues in SDEC and oesophagogastric surgery.
• Provide lower GI endoscopy services across main Trust sites and community hospitals where appropriate.
• Participate regularly in weekly colorectal and anal cancer MDT meetings.
• Liaise closely with on-site gastroenterology colleagues.
• Support education and training of junior staff, surgical trainees and other multidisciplinary team members.
• Participate in clinical governance, audit, morbidity and mortality review, guideline development and quality improvement projects.
• Engage in research and service innovation to deliver evidence-based surgical care.

Person Specification

Qualifications / Training

• Full GMC Registration.
• Fully accredited for Higher Specialist Training or eligible for inclusion on the Specialist Register within six months of the interview date.
• Current BLS Certification.
• Membership of relevant specialist societies or associations.

Experience / Clinical Skills

• Fully trained in General Surgery.
• Fully competent in Emergency General Surgery.
• Subspecialised in complex abdominal wall surgery.
• Ability to conduct colorectal clinics/MDT independently.
• Excellent clinical skills and experience meeting all aspects of the Job Plan.
• Ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems.
• Demonstrates clear, logical thinking and an analytical approach.
• Willingness to develop clinical skills and experience in area of interest.
• Undertaken a period of specialist training in a nationally recognised abdominal wall unit.

Teaching and Research

• Experience and commitment to training/teaching undergraduate and postgraduates.

Salary: £113,565 to £150,569 per annum, dependent on experience.
