Would you like to improve the transport system within Leicester? The Major Transport Projects Team develop and deliver highways and transport schemes to improve Leicester's roads and streets. Our portfolio covers a wide range of schemes such as improving the infrastructure, bus lanes and cameras. Join us as a Transport Development Officer in our team of specialist officers to ensure traffic flow around the city is more efficient and safer for all users. This is a permanent, full‑time position working 37 hours per week from Monday to Friday. You’ll have the flexibility to work from our main base at City Hall or from home. Appointment at a level will depend on the outcome of the selection process and experience of the successful candidate.
What you’ll be doing
- You will help to devise, design, plan and deliver improvements to roads, crossings and junctions, including road signing and road markings.
- This will involve carrying out assessments of sites, analysing key data such as accident statistics, undertaking research on factors such as traffic flow, pedestrian crossings, dimensions of footways and visibility.
- Using specialist software, you will design the proposal, considering costings, quantity of materials and funding options.
- Once approved, you will work with engineers to produce a detailed civil engineering design and in some cases procure contractors to complete the works.
- You will be responsible for the management of schemes, including carrying out public consultations and bearing in mind issues such as double yellow lines, bus lanes and the legality around making such improvements.
What you’ll need
- Strong project management skills, with the ability to write reports, work to tight deadlines and work as part of a team to meet project objectives.
- Experience in using IT applications to produce letters, spreadsheets, reports and presentations, and an understanding of highway design packages such as AutoCAD.
- Excellent communication, numerical and organisational skills to collaborate with stakeholders and deliver projects within set deadlines and to budget.
- A commitment to ensuring the Council’s transport policies are implemented and sustainable modes of transport promoted.
