The team consists of Transport Professional staff (Engineers and Project Managers) who carry out a varied range of design and project management tasks.
Join us as an Engineer in our team of specialists to ensure transport around the city is more efficient and safer for all users. We have a large portfolio of projects currently in the process of being constructed and we’re working on designs for a long list of future projects.
These are full time, permanent posts working 37 hours Monday to Friday. We currently operate a hybrid working policy whereby you’ll have the flexibility to work from home depending on experience and team requirements but we’ll also require you to come into City Hall or be on site for 2 days per week.
The Transport Professional Engineer role is a career graded job from Band 5 to LG Band 11. Appointment to a level will depend on the outcome of the selection process and experience of the successful candidates, however, we are looking to appoint towards the top end of the career grade Band 9 and Band 11. Dependent on availability of work/vacancy at a higher level, progress will be by satisfactory performance, agreed at annual appraisals and through ongoing supervision.
What you’ll be doing:
- Reporting to the Team Leader, you’ll help to devise, design, plan and deliver improvements to roads, crossings, and junctions, including road signing and road markings.
- This will involve carrying out assessments of sites, analysing data such as traffic flow, dimensions, choosing materials and developing detailed designs using specialist software.
- You’ll work as part of a team of professionals drawn from across the City Council to design proposals, calculate costs, quantify materials and consider funding options.
- You’ll produce a detailed civil engineering design work package and work with the Project Manager to procure contractors to complete the works.
- You’ll input into the management of schemes and evaluating the benefits produced.
- Working within the Transport Strategy Section and Major Transport Projects Team, you’ll assist in implementing the Council’s Traffic and Transport Policy.
- The section leads on the management of the transport network, advising on transport strategy, preparing the local transport plan, and commissioning new highways and traffic schemes for the city.
What you’ll need:
- The ideal candidate will have strong highway design skills with a track record of delivering highway and public realm schemes of varying complexity.
- You’ll have project management skills and a good understanding of transport, be able to write reports, work to tight deadlines and work as part of a team to meet project objectives.
- You’ll have experience in using appropriate IT applications, to produce letters, spreadsheets, reports, and presentations as well as be fully conversant with highway design packages such as AutoCAD, Key Terra Firma etc.
- Using excellent communication, numerical and organisational skills, you’ll be able to work collaboratively with stakeholders to deliver projects within deadlines and to budget.
- Most importantly you’ll share our commitment to ensuring the Council’s transport policies are implemented and sustainable modes of transport are promoted.
- A driving licence would be useful but you will also have access to the council’s pool bikes to be able to get out on site to manage your projects.
What we can offer you:
- As well as the satisfaction of helping to improve thousands of lives across Leicester, you can look forward to a work environment that encourages a healthy work/life balance.
