A fixed term/secondment vacancy until 31 Jan 2027 to cover maternity leave. The successful candidate must have significant experience in critical care nursing, evidence of leading a specialist nursing team and possess a post‑graduate critical care qualification. They should be a team player, communicate clearly, maintain a calm approach, foster continuous improvement and a patient‑centred environment.

Main Duties:

  • Ensure high quality patient care throughout the Adult Critical Care Unit at Withybush General Hospital.
  • Actively involve in patient care, supervise team, manage planned and unplanned admissions, ensure correct staffing levels.
  • Lead the unit during the absence of Senior Sisters and coach/develop junior team members.
  • Maintain an organised and professional department and promote continuous improvement.
  • Communicate effectively with multidisciplinary team.

Person Specification:

Essential Qualifications and Knowledge:

  • Registered Nurse (Part 1)
  • Current NMC Registration
  • Post‑graduate Critical Care course at diploma level
  • Bronze IQT
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Recognised Management qualification
  • Teaching qualification (or equivalent experience)

Essential Experience:

  • Appropriate experience in a critical care specialty with sound knowledge of the relevant specialty
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the NMC Code (2015)
  • Experience working in a multi‑professional environment
  • Experience running a ward/area/department
  • Experience with pre‑registration nursing/midwifery students
  • Experience in formal or informal teaching and mentoring pre‑registration students
  • Understanding of wider nursing and health‑care agenda
  • IT skills
  • Supervisory management skills
  • Reflective skills to translate theory into practice

Desirable Experience:

  • Experience coordinating a team
  • Experience facilitating learning in and from practice
  • Previous experience of leadership and management
  • Awareness of current issues in nursing and the specialty
  • Awareness of financial and resource management
