Legal & General (L&G) is a leading UK financial services group and major global investor. We have been safeguarding people's financial futures since 1836, striving to build a better society while improving the lives of our customers and creating value for shareholders. We are one of the world's largest asset managers and provide powerful asset origination capabilities. Together, these underpin our retirement and protection solutions: we are an international player in pension risk transfer, in UK and US life insurance, and in UK workplace pensions and retirement income.

L&G is committed to being a trusted voice in financial services and a thought leader on key policy issues. As Public Affairs and Policy Manager, you will help shape our engagement with government, parliamentarians, and policymakers—particularly in the asset management space. This is a strategic and externally-facing role, ideal for someone with strong political insight and a passion for influencing policy in a meaningful way.

What you will be doing:

  • Shaping policy positions: Proactively supporting the development of Legal & General's policy agenda, aligned with our corporate strategy. This includes building a strong understanding of the business and cultivating effective relationships within asset management and across the Group.
  • Supporting the leadership team: Providing timely political analysis and briefings on relevant developments to support the Group CEO, Group Management Committee, and other senior leaders in making informed decisions and communicating our policy positions externally.
  • Horizon scanning: Monitoring the political and public policy landscape to identify emerging trends, risks, and opportunities—particularly in relation to asset management. Evaluating their strategic relevance and communicating insights effectively to internal stakeholders. Contributing to the delivery of a robust public policy management framework.
  • Group-wide processes: Supporting the delivery of efficient internal processes and timely information sharing across divisions. Work closely with the Head of Public Affairs and Policy and the wider team to ensure strong cross-organisational collaboration and forward planning.
  • Advocating the L&G position: Representing Legal & General externally with key stakeholders, including politicians, advisers, civil servants, and trade bodies. Drafting consultation responses, participating in events, and contributing to the company's external policy engagement.
  • Thought leadership: Assisting the Director of Public Affairs and Policy in developing and delivering a research and engagement strategy that supports business priorities and enables the rollout of impactful, group-wide campaigns.
  • Consumer Duty: Ensuring the Public Affairs team responds effectively to public body requests and correspondence, maintaining high standards of accountability and alignment with Consumer Duty obligations.

Who we are looking for:

  • Deep understanding of the UK political landscape, with an established and active network across government, parliament, and policy circles.
  • Strong knowledge of the asset management sector, including its regulatory and policy challenges, with some understanding of international policy developments that may impact the industry.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex policy issues clearly and persuasively to a range of audiences.
  • Proven experience working in a complex, issue-rich environment—ideally within or alongside financial services or similarly regulated sectors.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a varied workload, operate independently, and deliver high-quality outputs under pressure.
  • A track record of engaging effectively with government officials, parliamentarians, trade associations, and think tanks.
  • Experience in identifying and managing public policy risks and opportunities, and in advising senior internal stakeholders on political and regulatory developments.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship management skills, with the ability to build trust and credibility across internal and external stakeholders.
  • Confident and effective influencer, capable of representing the organisation's interests with authority and professionalism.

Whatever your role, we reward performance and behaviour with a package that looks after all the things that are important to you. Here are some of the benefits we offer:

  • The opportunity to participate in our annual, performance-related bonus plan and valuable share schemes.
  • Generous pension contribution.
  • Life assurance.
  • Healthcare Plan (permanent employees only).
  • At least 25 days holiday, plus public holidays, 26 days after 2 years' service. There’s also the option to buy and sell holiday.
  • Competitive family leave.
  • Participate in our electric car scheme, which offers employees the option to hire a brand-new electric car through tax-efficient salary sacrifice (permanent employees only).
  • Discounts for our own products and at a range of high street stores and online.

In 2023, some of our workspaces were redesigned. Our offices are great spaces to connect and collaborate and have your wellbeing at the heart.

At L&G, we believe it’s possible to generate positive returns today while helping to build a better future for all. If you join us, you’ll be part of a welcoming, inclusive culture, with opportunities to collaborate with people of diverse backgrounds, views, and experiences. Guided by leaders with integrity who care about your future and wellbeing. Empowered through initiatives which support people to develop their careers and excel.

We care passionately about outcomes rather than attendance and are therefore open to discussing all kinds of flexible working options including part-time, term-time, and job shares. Although some roles have limited flexibility due to customer demand, we accommodate requests when we can. It doesn’t matter if you don’t meet every single criterion in this advert. Instead, think about what you excel at and what else you can bring in terms of strengths, potential, and connection to our purpose.
