Job Description

We’re recruiting for an Initial Risk Underwriter to join us. We’re offering a competitive base salary. We’re looking for an Initial Risk Underwriter to join our Retail Protection team, playing a key role in helping customers access the protection they need. This role sits within our underwriting function and focuses on reviewing applications, assessing risk and supporting fair, accurate decision-making. You’ll be working in a collaborative environment, ensuring that every customer receives the right outcome based on their individual circumstances. This is an excellent opportunity to build underwriting expertise while delivering a high-quality customer experience.

What you'll be doing:

  • Assessing customer applications to identify life and disability risk factors and determining appropriate terms within agreed authority levels
  • Reviewing medical and non-medical information to support accurate underwriting decisions
  • Requesting and evaluating additional information where needed to support fair and proportionate outcomes
  • Managing customer and intermediary queries efficiently to deliver a high standard of service
  • Maintaining accurate and up-to-date records to support clear communication and business decision-making
  • Identifying potential complaints and escalating appropriately to ensure timely resolution
  • Communicating with internal teams, external partners and third parties to obtain and provide relevant information
  • Keeping up to date with regulatory requirements, company policies and underwriting best practice

  • Understanding of risk factors affecting mortality and morbidity
  • Knowledge of protection products such as life insurance, critical illness and income protection
  • Awareness of relevant legislation and regulatory requirements is desirable
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills across a range of channels
  • Ability to assess applications holistically and make balanced, evidence-based decisions
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise and manage workload effectively
  • Commitment to delivering an excellent customer experience
  • Willingness to learn and develop underwriting knowledge, with training provided
