The Consumer Panel Associate will provide a complete range of policy and secretariat support to the LSB’s independent Consumer Panel. A good all-rounder, you will be equally comfortable communicating as developing policy. You will work with the Panel to develop challenging, evidence-based advice to the Legal Services Board and others on a range of legal services consumer policy projects and will need to focus on the identification and evaluation of relevant evidence-based research to ensure that there are fair consumer outcomes in the legal market. With a commitment to furthering the interests of all users of legal services, you will be able to identify and deploy relevant evidence and to drive intellectually complex issues to a firm conclusion.

Main responsibilities

  • Working with the Panel to devise and implement its policy work programme.
  • Preparing briefing material for the Panel and others on issues affecting consumers in the legal services market place.
  • Taking lead responsibility for individual projects from project design through to drafting reports and communicating policy externally.
  • Identifying and working closely with stakeholders.
  • Representing the Panel on working groups and at external events.
  • Developing research proposals and undertaking desk-based research.
  • Assessing policy and market developments and their likely impact on consumer interests and the resultant regulatory issues for the legal market.
  • Supporting the Panel Manager in ensuring the Panel runs effectively including organisation and support of meetings (including agenda preparation, paper drafting, minute-taking and liaison with Panel Members).
  • Working with colleagues within the LSB and beyond to ensure mutual understanding of respective policy positions.

Person specification

  • Experience may include: policy, communications, economics; regulation and or competition; law or the wider legal services market; consumer policy.
  • The role will require:
    • First class analytical skills, including the ability to research and develop consumer policy options.
    • Excellent communication skills with the ability to understand data and research, write high quality reports and deliver presentations.
    • Experience of building and maintaining effective working relationships, readily taking the initiative to ensure flexible and constructive working across boundaries.
    • The personal gravitas to establish relations of trust with the most senior colleagues.
    • The ability and enthusiasm to maintain momentum on multiple and sometimes competing priorities and tasks.
    • Some experience of working/managing committees or panels.
    • Some knowledge of law/economics would be an advantage.

Benefits

  • 35 hours per week with a competitive salary, a defined contribution pension scheme with an employer’s contribution of 12-13% of salary, benefits allowance and an annual leave entitlement of 25 days in addition to statutory bank holidays.
  • Salary: up to Β£40k per annum plus 10% flexible benefits allowance.
