We are seeking a Senior Platform Engineer to design, build and operate core platform services that enable secure, scalable and efficient delivery. You will develop infrastructure using Terraform, drive automation through Bash and Python, and continuously improve platforms by eliminating manual processes.

You will own key platform capabilities, apply cloud architecture best practices, and ensure solutions are secure, resilient and scalable. You will also troubleshoot complex issues using logs and metrics, applying strong networking knowledge to maintain reliability.

Working closely with application teams, you will enable adoption of GitHub, Kubernetes and ArgoCD through a self‑service, automation‑first approach. As a senior contributor, you will mentor engineers and promote best practices aligned to business needs.

What you'll be doing:

  • Designing, building and operating central platform services (e.g. GitHub, Kubernetes, ArgoCD, CI/CD tooling) to enable application delivery across Retail
  • Leading infrastructure automation using Terraform to ensure scalable, consistent and repeatable environments
  • Supporting application teams with platform onboarding by providing guidance, reusable patterns and hands‑on expertise
  • Developing and standardising GitHub Actions and CI/CD workflows to improve efficiency and reduce duplication
  • Managing and optimising Kubernetes environments to ensure performance, resilience and operational stability
  • Driving adoption of GitOps practices and automated deployment strategies using tools such as ArgoCD
  • Troubleshooting and resolving complex platform, infrastructure and networking issues using logs, monitoring and debugging tools
  • Collaborating with stakeholders and mentoring engineers to promote best practices while supporting key initiatives such as Azure DevOps to GitHub migration

Who we're looking for:

  • Demonstrated hands‑on expertise in Terraform for Infrastructure as Code and Kubernetes (AKS preferred) within Azure cloud environments
  • Strong experience with GitHub, including GitHub Actions and workflow automation to support CI/CD practices
  • Solid understanding of containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes) and modern DevOps and GitOps practices, including tools such as ArgoCD
  • Proficiency in Linux systems and scripting (Bash/Shell), with working knowledge of Python considered advantageous
  • Good understanding of networking fundamentals, including routing, load balancing and cloud security principles
  • Experience with monitoring and observability tools (e.g. Prometheus, Grafana) and exposure to API‑driven automation or configuration management tools (e.g. Ansible)
  • Proven track record (5+ years) in DevOps, Platform or Cloud Engineering roles, contributing to shared platforms and working across cross‑functional teams
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to mentor engineers, promote automation‑first and self‑service approaches, and drive continuous improvement in Agile environments

Benefits:

  • The opportunity to participate in our annual, performance‑related bonus plan and valuable share schemes
  • Generous pension contribution
  • Life assurance
  • Healthcare Plan (permanent employees only)
  • At least 25 days holiday, plus public holidays, 26 days after 2 years’ service. There’s also the option to buy and sell holiday
  • Competitive family leave
  • Participate in our electric car scheme, which offers employees the option to hire a brand‑new electric car through tax‑efficient salary sacrifice (permanent employees only)
  • There are many discounts we offer – both for our own products and at a range of high street stores and online
  • We’re creating net‑zero carbon workplaces by 2030 by investing in our sustainable, modern offices across the UK, all designed to bring people together and elevate the in‑person experience

How to prepare for a job interview at Legal & General

Brush Up on Your Coding Skills

For a full-time software engineering role, it's crucial that we stay sharp with our coding abilities. Expect technical questions that might involve solving problems on the spot or discussing algorithms. Practise on platforms like LeetCode or HackerRank to get comfortable with the types of questions that often come up.

Know Your Tools and Frameworks

Make sure we’re well-acquainted with the tools and technologies listed in the job description. Familiarise ourselves with any specific frameworks or programming languages mentioned. If Legal & General uses React or Node.js, for instance, be ready to discuss how we’ve used them in previous projects or coursework.

Showcase Your Projects

Bring along a portfolio that highlights our best work. This could be code samples, GitHub repositories, or any side projects we’ve built. Make sure we can talk through our thought process for each project, especially the challenges we faced and how we solved them—this shows our problem-solving skills in action.

Prepare for Behavioural Questions

While technical skills are key, full-time positions also require cultural fit. Be ready to discuss our previous experiences and how we handle teamwork, conflict, and deadlines. Brush up on the STAR method—Situation, Task, Action, Result—to clearly articulate our past experiences when discussing how we've contributed to a team.
