We are seeking an experienced Solutions Architect to join Legal & General Retail and play a key role in designing and delivering modern digital solutions across customer-facing platforms, including mobile applications and web experiences. This is an exciting opportunity to shape end-to-end solution architecture across digital channels, ensuring seamless customer journeys supported by scalable, resilient microservices and secure AWS cloud implementations.

The successful candidate will define and drive the target state digital architecture, working across multiple Agile Scrum teams to ensure alignment with enterprise standards and the consistent delivery of high-quality customer experiences. This role requires strong collaboration with Product Owners, engineers, and stakeholders, alongside the ability to translate business needs into robust, future-proof technical solutions that enable innovation and continuous improvement.

What you'll be doing:

  • Producing and owning end-to-end solution architecture for digital platforms, including mobile applications and web, ensuring alignment to business objectives and seamless customer journeys.
  • Leading architectural decisions across single page applications, backend integrations, and API-led ecosystems to enable scalable and future-ready solutions.
  • Collaborating with engineering and delivery teams to ensure component-level designs align with the overall architecture and adhere to enterprise principles and target state.
  • Communicating architecture decisions, rationale, and trade-offs to stakeholders and governance forums to support informed and consistent decision making.
  • Partnering with Product Owners, Business Analysts, and Technology Leads to translate business outcomes into robust, secure, and operationally sound solutions.
  • Participating in Agile ceremonies, including PI planning and sprint activities, to ensure alignment between delivery and architectural direction.
  • Supporting estimation and planning processes by working closely with engineering teams to validate and refine delivery scope and timelines.
  • Driving the translation of customer journeys into technical designs, embedding non-functional requirements, maintaining architecture models, and supporting successful delivery of technology change.

Who we're looking for:

  • A degree or equivalent professional experience, with TOGAF or similar architecture certification desirable and cloud certifications across Azure or AWS strongly preferred.
  • Strong expertise in designing and delivering microservices-based architectures within complex enterprise environments.
  • Deep knowledge of modern cloud technologies, including PaaS, containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes), serverless, and AWS services such as EKS.
  • Proven experience delivering scalable APIs and microservices using container platforms or native cloud tooling, supporting integration with external consumers.
  • Solid understanding of event-driven architecture patterns and business process management approaches.
  • Advanced knowledge of modern authentication and authorisation standards, including OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, SAML, and JWT-based security models.
  • Strong alignment to cloud architecture frameworks and best practices, ensuring solutions are secure, resilient, scalable, and cost efficient.
  • A proven track record of delivering large-scale, multi-year technology initiatives, with strong stakeholder engagement, communication skills, and experience working in Agile environments.

Benefits:

  • The opportunity to participate in our annual, performance‑related bonus plan and valuable share schemes.
  • Generous pension contribution.
  • Life assurance.
  • Healthcare plan (permanent employees only).
  • At least 25 days holiday, plus public holidays, 26 days after 2 years’ service; option to buy and sell holiday.
  • Competitive family leave.
  • Participation in our electric car scheme, offering employees the option to hire a brand-new electric car through tax-efficient salary sacrifice (permanent employees only).
  • Multiple discounts on our own products and at a range of high street stores and online.
  • Commitment to creating net‑zero carbon workplaces by 2030 through investment in sustainable, modern offices.

How to prepare for a job interview at Legal & General

Brush Up on Your Coding Skills

For a full-time software engineering role, it's crucial that we stay sharp with our coding abilities. Expect technical questions that might involve solving problems on the spot or discussing algorithms. Practise on platforms like LeetCode or HackerRank to get comfortable with the types of questions that often come up.

Know Your Tools and Frameworks

Make sure we’re well-acquainted with the tools and technologies listed in the job description. Familiarise ourselves with any specific frameworks or programming languages mentioned. If Legal & General uses React or Node.js, for instance, be ready to discuss how we’ve used them in previous projects or coursework.

Showcase Your Projects

Bring along a portfolio that highlights our best work. This could be code samples, GitHub repositories, or any side projects we’ve built. Make sure we can talk through our thought process for each project, especially the challenges we faced and how we solved them—this shows our problem-solving skills in action.

Prepare for Behavioural Questions

While technical skills are key, full-time positions also require cultural fit. Be ready to discuss our previous experiences and how we handle teamwork, conflict, and deadlines. Brush up on the STAR method—Situation, Task, Action, Result—to clearly articulate our past experiences when discussing how we've contributed to a team.
