Job Description
We’re recruiting for a Technical Manager to join our Bereavements Team. As a Bereavements Technical Specialist, you’ll play a key role in delivering exceptional service within Retail Annuities Bereavements. You’ll use your expertise in systems and processes to ensure technical accuracy and compliance, while driving improvements that enhance customer experience. You’ll proactively identify and mitigate technical and operational risks, ensuring adherence to processes and escalating issues to compliance teams when needed. A big part of your role will be finding smarter, safer alternatives to manual workarounds and applying continuous improvement principles to streamline processes and reduce end‑to‑end times. This position is central to delivering consistently excellent customer outcomes. You’ll provide technical advice, resolve complex queries, and collaborate with stakeholders to implement solutions that make a real difference.
What you’ll be doing
- Acting as a technical expert for bereavement and annuity processes, including GMPE and scheme‑specific benefits
- Providing guidance on complex queries and serving as an escalation point
- Supporting accurate tax treatment on annuity payments and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements
- Championing continuous improvement initiatives to streamline processes and reduce end‑to‑end times
- Identifying and mitigating operational and technical risks across bereavement processing
- Coaching and mentoring colleagues to build technical capability within the team
- Engaging with internal and external stakeholders to resolve technical queries and align on scheme rules
- Analysing feedback to ensure good customer outcomes and escalating failings where necessary
Qualifications
Who we’re looking for
- Experience in a technical role within pensions, annuities, or bereavement services
- Strong understanding of GMPE and scheme‑specific technical rules
- Good knowledge of HMRC regulations related to bereavement annuities, including tax and reporting obligations
- Proven ability to identify and implement process improvements using continuous improvement principles
- Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills with high attention to detail
- Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills
- Ability to coach and mentor others, sharing technical knowledge effectively
- Familiarity with complex systems and end‑to‑end operational processes
