Overview
In this role you will assess life and disability applications to determine appropriate underwriting terms, supporting informed risk decisions across Life Insurance, Critical Illness Cover, and Income Protection. You will work within a collaborative team, balancing risk with customer outcomes and commercial needs. The role offers flexible working and strong development opportunities in underwriting. Responsibilities
- Assess life and disability risk by reviewing applications and determining underwriting terms with your level of autonomy
- Make underwriting decisions across Life, Critical Illness, and Income Protection to balance risk, outcomes, and commercial considerations
- Lead or participate in process improvement initiatives to enhance underwriting quality, systems, efficiency, and viability
- Request additional medical or financial information as needed while keeping the customer journey proportionate
- Identify potential complaints and ensure they are escalated with root-cause analysis for continuous improvement and compliance
- Maintain accurate, timely underwriting records to support reporting and decision-making
- Stay up-to-date with legislative and regulatory requirements to keep underwriting compliant
- Communicate professionally with internal and external stakeholders across multiple channels
- Ensure underwriting activity supports sales service levels and customer delivery standards
Key requirements
- Proven experience underwriting UK protection products
- UK medical underwriting experience (essential)
- Strong understanding of mortality and morbidity risk factors, including financial underwriting
- Extensive knowledge of Life, Critical Illness, and Income Protection products
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Knowledge of relevant UK legislation and regulatory requirements
- Experience contributing to or leading underwriting improvement initiatives
