The Role

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Payroll Assistant / Payroll Administrator to join a successful and growing professional services firm in North West / West London.

This is a varied, client-facing payroll role working closely with an experienced Payroll Manager and supporting a portfolio of clients.

You will play an important part in ensuring payrolls are delivered accurately and on time, while providing a reliable first point of contact for routine client queries.

The role combines client contact, payroll administration, checking, coordination and hands-on payroll support, making it ideal for someone who enjoys both the technical and relationship side of payroll.

The working pattern is four days in the office and one day working remotely each week.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support a portfolio of clients across weekly, fortnightly, four-weekly and monthly payroll cycles.
  • Act as a first point of contact for routine payroll queries.
  • Liaise professionally with clients regarding payroll information, deadlines and changes.
  • Process and check starters, leavers, bonuses, deductions and other payroll amendments.
  • Carry out first-level payroll checks before final review and sign-off.
  • Assist with gross-to-net reconciliations.
  • Support PAYE, National Insurance and RTI submissions, including FPS and EPS.
  • Assist with P32s, pension uploads and auto-enrolment administration.
  • Support statutory payment calculations including SMP, SSP and SPP.
  • Assist with holiday pay, salary sacrifice and benefits administration.
  • Maintain accurate payroll records and client information.
  • Monitor payroll deadlines and ensure required information is received on time.
  • Work closely with the Payroll Manager and wider payroll processing team.
  • Help identify opportunities to improve payroll processes, controls and efficiency.
  • Provide additional payroll support and cover when required.

About You

We would particularly like to hear from candidates with:

  • Previous payroll or payroll-support experience.
  • Experience within an accountancy practice, payroll bureau or multi-client payroll environment.
  • A good understanding of PAYE, National Insurance and RTI.
  • Knowledge of statutory payments and workplace pensions.
  • Experience dealing directly with client or employee payroll queries.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Good Excel and general systems skills.
  • Clear and professional communication skills.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to work to deadlines.
  • A proactive approach and willingness to take ownership of your work.

Desirable Experience

Experience in any of the following would be advantageous:

  • IRIS/Star Payroll, QTAC, Paycircle or similar payroll software.
  • Auto-enrolment and pension administration.
  • P11Ds and benefits-in-kind.
  • Payroll year-end.
  • Data imports or payroll automation.
  • Working within a wider or remotely based payroll processing team.
  • CIPP qualification, part-qualification or studying towards a payroll qualification.

Why Apply?

This is a strong opportunity for someone who wants to develop within payroll while working closely with an experienced Payroll Manager.

The role offers:

  • A hybrid working pattern β€” four days in the office and one day remote.
  • A varied, client-facing payroll position.
  • Exposure to a broad range of payroll clients.
  • Genuine responsibility without requiring Payroll Manager-level experience.
  • The opportunity to develop your technical payroll knowledge.
  • A supportive and professional working environment.
  • Scope to take on greater responsibility as the payroll function continues to grow.
