The Opportunity
We’re looking for a highly analytical and commercially aware Balance Sheet Manager to join our Treasury and Financial Planning & Analysis function.
This is an influential role supporting the Society’s management of its balance sheet and associated financial risks. You’ll lead detailed capital and liquidity stress testing, support the management of interest rate risk and model risk, and produce key regulatory documents, including the Society’s ICAAP, ILAAP and Recovery Plan.
You’ll also play an important role in Treasury activity, acting as the team’s primary dealer and undertaking interest rate swap transactions to support the management of Interest Rate Risk in the Banking Book. Working closely with colleagues across Finance, Products and the wider Society, you’ll provide high-quality analysis, challenge assumptions and help translate complex financial information into clear recommendations.
You’ll prepare papers and risk reporting for ALCO and other committees, contributing directly to informed decision-making and the effective management of the Society’s capital, liquidity and interest rate risk.
What You'll Be Doing
✓ Leading detailed capital and liquidity stress testing and ensuring the resulting analysis is accurate, robust and appropriately evidenced
✓ Preparing and maintaining the Society’s ICAAP, ILAAP and Recovery Plan, working with relevant areas across the business to produce high-quality regulatory documents
✓ Keeping the Recovery Plan aligned with relevant regulatory expectations and developments
✓ Leading customer behavioural analysis to support capital, liquidity and interest rate risk management
✓ Supporting improvements to the Society’s Financial Planning and Treasury model estate
✓ Ensuring Treasury risks are accurately reported by working with the reporting team and updating models where required
✓ Preparing clear, evidence-based papers on Treasury matters for ALCO and other committees
✓ Reviewing and updating Treasury risk appetite and policy documents and presenting them to ALCO and the Board for approval
✓ Supporting the development and effective implementation of the Society’s model-risk framework
✓ Acting as the Treasury team’s primary dealer and transacting interest rate swaps with approved counterparties to manage Interest Rate Risk in the Banking Book
✓ Managing the Society’s interest rate risk hedging programme, including oversight of tranche-management data and processes
✓ Working with Products and Finance colleagues to ensure hedging information is accurate, current and produced efficiently
✓ Exploring opportunities to use excess liquidity appropriately for investment and interest rate risk management
✓ Ensuring Treasury activity complies with internal policies and relevant regulatory standards
✓ Promoting collaboration, constructive challenge and continuous improvement across Treasury and Financial Planning
What We're Looking For
Essential
✓ A relevant accounting, Treasury, finance or risk qualification, progress towards one, or equivalent professional experience
✓ Experience working in Treasury, balance sheet management, financial risk or a related finance role
✓ Knowledge of capital, liquidity and interest rate risk management
✓ Experience analysing complex financial information, maintaining financial models and developing clear recommendations
✓ An understanding of stress testing, financial modelling and appropriate model controls
✓ Experience preparing clear reports or papers for senior stakeholders or committees
✓ Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Excel
✓ An understanding of the regulatory environment within financial services
✓ Strong numerical and analytical skills, with excellent attention to detail
✓ The ability to challenge assumptions, identify financial risks and explain complex information clearly to specialist and non-specialist audiences
Desirable
✓ Knowledge of building society or retail banking products and balance sheets
✓ Experience within a building society, bank or another regulated financial services organisation
✓ Knowledge or experience of ICAAP, ILAAP, recovery planning and Interest Rate Risk in the Banking Book
✓ Experience supporting capital, liquidity or interest rate risk management and stress testing
✓ Knowledge or experience of Treasury dealing, interest rate swaps or hedging
✓ Experience of ALCO reporting or model-risk management
We welcome applications from candidates who can demonstrate strong transferable Treasury, finance or financial-risk experience, even if their background is not specifically within a building society.
