London Assembly and secretariat
The London Assembly scrutinises the Mayor\’s activities by questioning the Mayor about their decisions. The Assembly also investigates issues of importance to London.
There are 25 Assembly Members, elected every four years at the same time as the Mayor. The Secretariat works for the Assembly to support its activities.
About The Team And Role
The Liberal Democrat Group scrutinises the work of the Mayor across the policy areas of transport, housing, environment, policing, health, the economy, planning and regeneration, fire and emergency planning, and the Mayors multi-billion pound budget. Applications are invited from candidates with extensive press and media experience in a busy office and of working for elected representatives or similar high profile public individuals.
Your role will involve working closely with the teams Senior Researcher who leads on communications and the two Research and Support Officers, including setting and co-ordinating the day-to-day work of the team. You will need to liaise with external stakeholders to ensure that the work of the group is represented and promoted through a variety of media, both proactively and reactively promoting the work of the Assembly Members. An in-depth knowledge and understanding of a variety of media is vital.
You will work across the full range of policy areas and produce policy briefings and issues papers to be communicated internally and externally. This role works closely with the team and two elected politicians in a dynamic, friendly environment. The work is fast moving and varied.
What your day will look like

  • Producing media monitoring reports for Assembly Members;
  • Writing briefings for Assembly Members on upcoming Committee meetings, interviews and events;
  • Responding to media and press enquiries to promote the work of the group.

Skills, knowledge and experience
To be considered for the role you must meet the following essential criteria:

  • Experience of working with elected politicians and/or senior officers: Developing rapport and working effectively with a diverse range of people, sharing knowledge and skills to deliver shared goals;
  • Knowledge and understanding of media handling techniques, including strategies, including designing and delivering an effective communications plan for an elected politician;
  • Experience of responding to media / press enquiries, and using a variety of media to generate coverage;
  • Demonstrable research skills, to enable quick and effective grasp of information from a range of sources on a wide range of policy topics, and proven experience of policy briefing in a political/ public sector organisation.
  • Organisational awareness: Understanding and being sensitive to organisational dynamics, culture and politics across and beyond the GLA and shaping our approach accordingly.

Benefits
GLA staff are hybrid working up to 3 days a week in our offices and remotely depending on their role. As part of this, you will need to split your time between home working and coming into the office.
In addition to a good salary package, you will be paid every four weeks, providing frequent salary payments. We also offer an attractive range of benefits including 30 days annual leave, interest free season ticket loan, interest free bicycle loan and a career average pension scheme.
