Specialist Prosthetic Physiotherapist

Anexciting opportunity has arisen for a 1.0 WTE (37.5 hours) SpecialistPhysiotherapist to join the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Outpatients ProstheticService. Specialist Rehabilitation covers the Prosthetic, Orthotic andWheelchair Service. The role will be mainly based within the ProstheticDepartment with some leadership support offered to the other SpecialistRehabilitation departments if required.

TheProsthetic Service is one of the largest in the UK and has a full complementof highly skilled Consultants, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists,Clinical Psychologists, Prosthetists, Technical Instructors and ProstheticsTechnicians who specialise in the treatment of adults and children amputees.

Thesuccessful applicant must be able to demonstrate specialist clinicalknowledge around prosthetics and amputee rehabilitation.

Weare looking for a highly motivated physiotherapist, who is innovative with acommitment to excellenceat incorporates education,adult and research.

Asignificant component of the post will involve Operational line management tothe physiotherapy team. The job holder will be responsible for their owncontinuous, personal and professional development and will be expected tofollow the Leeds Way values of the organisation and model these behaviourswithin their leadership.

Main duties of the job

Toperform specialist assessments, treatment and on-going care for patients withlimb loss, both locally and regionally. As an experienced physiotherapist thejob holder will co-ordinate the activities of the team ensuring efficient andeffective service in a limb loss outpatients provision, whilst providingtraining, supervision and clinical expertise to qualified, unqualified staffand students. The post holder will be required to ensure effectivecommunication is maintained at all times, working as core member of the MDTand liaising with other health care professionals and carers.

Asthe lead clinician in this speciality the jobholder will act as a role modelto the physiotherapy team, promoting quality evidence-based practice andcontributing to the effective management of the team.

Job responsibilities

To perform the advancedphysiotherapeutic assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients within thisspecialist field who may have complex physical and psychological conditionsand /or chronic presentation. He / She will play a key role in the development,implementation and evaluation of specialist physiotherapy and packages ofcare.

As an experienced physiotherapistthe jobholder will assist in co-ordinating the activities of the teamensuring efficient and effective service provision. He / She will be requiredto ensure effective communication is maintained at all times, whilst providingtraining, supervision and clinical expertise to qualified and unqualifiedstaff and students.

As a lead clinician in thisspeciality, the jobholder will act as a role model to the physiotherapy team,promoting quality evidence-based practice, developing the physiotherapy teamand contributing to the effective management of the team.

The post holder will be responsiblefor managing their own individual caseload which will be varied and onoccasions require prioritisation to best meet the service demands.

To undertake all aspects of work asan autonomous practitioner within this specialist field.

He / She will be required tosupport the Head of Service in the day to day management of this team ofphysiotherapists, support staff and students.

To be professional and legallyresponsible and accountable for all aspects of your own work relating to theassessment and treatment of patients in your care undertaking clinical dutiesas an autonomous practitioner.

To undertake the comprehensiveassessment and treatment of patients including those with diverse / complex /multi pathological presentation. This will necessitate the use of advancedinvestigative and analytical skills to formulate an accurate diagnosis andtreatment plan from a range of options.

Using advanced investigative andanalytical skills to formulate individualised management and treatment plansincluding the development of complex discharge plans.

To accept clinical responsibilityfor a designated caseload of patients within this specialist field and toorganise this effectively and efficiently with regard of clinical prioritiesand use of time.

To demonstrate dexterity,co-ordination and palpatory skills in the assessment and manual treatment ofpatients.

To develop and deliver thephysiotherapy element of the rehabilitation programme and on occasion todeliver some elements normally undertaken by nursing or occupational therapycolleagues.

To be active member of the out ofhours service.

The working pattern will requireflexibility including seven day working to ensure safe and affective serviceprovision.

Use a range of verbal andnon-verbal communication tools to communicate effectively with patients toprogress treatment and rehabilitation programmes. This will include patientswho may have difficulties in understanding communicating or have challengingbehaviour.

Ability to work in a stressfulenvironment imparting complex information regarding poor rehabilitationprognosis on a daily basis.

Ability to deal effectively withemotional and / or aggressive patients and / or carers on a daily basis. Thiswill necessitate the use of developed communication skills e.g. the abilityto negotiate motivates and reassure.

Assess patient understanding oftreatment proposals, gain valid informed consent and have the knowledge towork within a legal framework with patients who lack capacity to consent totreatment.

To ensure a high standard ofclinical care for the patients under your management and support more juniorstaff to do likewise.

Formulate and deliver specialisedphysiotherapy treatment programmes based on a sound knowledge of evidencebased practice and treatment options using clinical assessment reasoningskills and knowledge of treatment options e.g., manual physiotherapy, techniques,patient education, exercise classes, electrotherapy techniques and otheralternative options.

To represent the physiotherapyservice and / or individual patients at multi-disciplinary team meetings, toensure the delivery of a co-ordinated multidisciplinary service andintegration of physiotherapy treatment. This will include discussion ofpatient care, patient progress and involvement in discharge planning.

In the absence of the Head ofSpecialist Rehabilitation to represent the trust externally (locally,regionally and nationally) regarding physiotherapy services provided to thisgroup of patients.

To provide spontaneous and plannedspecialist advice, teaching and instruction to relatives, carers and otherprofessionals to promote understanding of the aims of physiotherapy, and toensure a consistent approach to patient care.

To effectively communicate complexclinical information with patients and carers to maximise rehabilitationpotential and to ensure understanding of their condition.

To be an active member of thein-service training programme. You will be responsible for the provision ofspecialist teaching to peers and juniors on a range of subjects through thedelivery of in-service training sessions, tutorials individual training sessionsexternal courses and peer review.

To co-ordinate and deliver coretraining within the speciality to qualified and unqualified physiotherapystaff and students.

To train, supervise and performancemanages more junior staff, technical instructors, assistants and students ona daily basis. This will include the use of formal appraisal documentation.

To provide daily support, guidanceand training to more junior staff, support workers and students assessingevaluating and ensuring competence. To provide highly specialist advice,teaching and training to physiotherapy colleagues and other members of theMDT regarding the medical and physiotherapy management of this group ofpatients.

Maintain and develop currentknowledge of evidence based practice in this specialist clinical field.

As a senior member of the clinicalteam you will be required to ensure that you implement policy and servicedevelopment changes and ensure that others do likewise.

To be responsible for maintainingown competency to practice through Continued Professional Developmentactivities and maintain a portfolio which reflects your own personaldevelopment.

To communicate effectively and workcollaboratively with medical, nursing and therapy colleagues to ensuredelivery of a co-ordinated multidisciplinary service. This will include caseconferences, ward rounds and discharge planning as appropriate

To participate in the staffappraisal scheme as an appraisee and appraiser and be responsible forcomplying with your agreed personal development programmes to meet setknowledge and competencies.

To regularly undertake themeasurement and evaluation of your work and current practices through the useof evidence based practice projects, audit and outcome measures eitherindividually or with colleagues. Make recommendations for change asappropriate

To demonstrate an understanding ofclinical governance and risk management and apply to work situation.

To maintain own continuingprofession development (CPD) by keeping abreast of any new trends anddevelopments, incorporating them as necessary into work.

To supervise and co-ordinatephysiotherapy staff within your area on a day to day basis

In the absence of the Head ofSpecialist Rehabilitation you may be required to participate in workingparties developing policy changes within clinical support services which willimpact on service users.

To assist the Head of SpecialistRehabilitation and Head of Services in developing the strategic andoperational management of the physiotherapy service provided to thisspecialist area.

To regularly undertake researchinto specific areas of clinical practice and service delivery using a rangeof research methodologies as part of MDT audit and departmental researchinitiatives making recommendations for change as appropriate.
