An exciting opportunity has arisen at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust for a passionate and enthusiastic band 7 Midwife, to join the team as a Specialist Health Equity Midwife. The role is a fixed term 12 month contract to cover maternity leave in the existing team. In Leeds, we provide maternity care to around 10,000 women a year currently across two hospital sites and within the community. Leeds has an ethnically diverse and socio-economically varied maternity population. We are looking for a midwife with a passion for improving equity in maternity services and an energy for improving population health.

You need to be dedicated and possess excellent interpersonal skills and teamwork. You will be part of a busy multi-disciplinary team who are dedicated to providing personalised care to the women, birthing people and families that access our service. The successful candidate will have a remit to support the Consultant Midwife for Health Equity to assess, review and identify ways of reducing health inequalities within the local maternity population and support improving population health initiatives.

The postholder will work with the consultant midwife to support health equity, engaging women, birthing people, and families at risk of inequalities, and developing strategies to improve population health based on UK MBRRACE findings.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will be required to establish effective and trusted communication channels with childbearing women, pregnant people and their families, ensuring all multidisciplinary team members are aware of available services and pathways. This will support improvements in personalised care in line with Equity and Equality Guidance for Local Maternity and Neonatal Services. They will use local data and service user feedback to drive care quality improvements for those experiencing health inequalities, promoting safety, wellbeing and positive birth experiences.

The role includes contributing to workforce education on health equity and public health topics. The postholder will support delivery of the Athena Care Pathway, a midwife-led enhanced pathway for women and birthing people with class III obesity, taking a holistic approach to improving population health during pregnancy. They will also contribute to designing and piloting quality improvement projects that enhance health equity. Additionally, the role involves supporting existing equity initiatives with local communities, including Maternal Journal and midwife-led equity drop-in services for individuals with complex social factors.

About us: LTHT Maternity Services support the birth of approximately 9000 babies per year. We are a tertiary referral unit with the largest Fetal Medicine Unit in the North. We also have a Quaternary Paediatric and Cardiac Surgery unit, the largest Congenital Cardiac Service in the North of England, and we are specialists in Prematurity Prevention.
