Applicants are invited for a post as Trust doctor/Clinical Fellow (ST3-5 equivalent) in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a friendly, dynamic, large, teaching acute hospital trust. The post holder will work at a level equivalent to that of a ST3+ trainee. Applicants must have completed Foundation competencies either as part of the UK Foundation programme or demonstrate equivalent training. Applicants should ideally have experience working at a ST3+ level for a minimum of 1 year ideally within the UK. Basic Life Support training is essential. Candidates will require current and valid GMC registration at the time of application.

Main duties of the job:

  • The above post is suitable for doctors wishing to gain clinical experience at a ST3+ level in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
  • The post offers the successful candidate a wide range of experience in all areas of the specialty.
  • Whilst this post is not recognised for training, the appointee will be supported by a Clinical Supervisor to meet their career and educational goals.
  • The post holder will contribute to the Obstetrics and Gynaecology inpatient and outpatient services as well as being part of the second on call rota with an on call frequency of 1 in 10.
  • The post holder will predominantly work at the SJUH and LGI sites.
  • Duties will involve but will not be limited to working on the labour ward, reviewing obstetric and gynaecology (including early pregnancy) emergencies and looking after antenatal, postnatal and gynaecology inpatients as well as attending antenatal and gynaecology clinics.
  • There will also be opportunities to attend elective gynaecology and obstetric theatres.
  • The post holder will also be encouraged to take part in departmental teaching and quality improvement work.

About us:

The gynaecology service is predominantly based at St James University Hospital (Chancellor Wing) and some elective gynaecology work including clinics, day case and overnight theatre and hysteroscopy also takes place at Wharfdale hospital. The fertility service is based at Seacroft Hospital. The maternity service is based at St James University Hospital (approximately 4,500 deliveries per year) and Leeds General Infirmary (approximately 5,000 deliveries per year).

Job responsibilities:

  • The post holder will work on the second on call (ST3+) rota, and as such will take on the responsibilities associated with this role.
  • The post holder will be supervised by a Consultant during clinical duties whether elective or on call and will be expected to work as part of a multidisciplinary team, demonstrating good communication skills with all members of the team.
  • The weekly timetable will vary from week to week. It will include sessions in antenatal clinic, delivery suite, gynaecology outpatients, gynaecology theatre and the emergency gynaecology assessment unit.
  • These sessions are aimed to diversify the post holders clinical experience, to provide a service and to accommodate the rolling on call rota of long days and night shifts on labour ward and the gynaecology acute treatment unit.
  • On call frequency is 1 in 10. The post-holder will always be resident in the hospital when on duty.
  • The Consultant Obstetrician will be resident between 08.30-22.00 on weekdays and 08.30 and 17.30 on weekends.
  • The Consultant Gynaecologist will be resident between 08.30 and 17.00 on weekdays and will conduct a resident ward round on weekends.
  • They will remain resident beyond these times if required but will otherwise be on call from home.
  • The post complies with the New Deal requirements and the European Working Time Directive.

Person Specification:

  • Have completed their post-graduate training at least to a level of an ST3 specialty doctor or equivalent in obstetrics and gynaecology.
  • Have valid GMC Registration at the time of application.
  • Familiarity with UK health system and NHS.
  • Is up to date and fit to practise safely and is aware of own training needs.
  • Applicants must have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English, adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues, as assessed by the GMC.
  • Ability to apply sound clinical knowledge and judgement to problems.
  • Ability to prioritise clinical need.
  • Ability to maximise safety and minimise risk.
  • Recognition of, and ability to undertake the initial management of, an acutely ill patient.
  • Demonstrates understanding of research, including awareness of ethical issues.
  • Demonstrates understanding of the basic principles of audit, clinical risk management, evidence-based practice, patient safety, and clinical quality improvement initiatives.
  • At least 1 year experience working at middle grade (ST3+) in UK.
  • Be competent at Lower segment caesarean section and non-rotational operative vaginal delivery.
  • Relevant experience in other specialties which would complement a post in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
  • At least 2 years experience working in the UK.

Additional Requirements:

  • Applicants must meet professional health requirements (in line with GMC standards / Good Medical Practice).
  • Completion of Foundation competencies or equivalent.
  • Basic Adult Life Support training within past 12 months.
  • MRCOG Part 1.
  • Competencies equivalent to ST3 training.
  • MRCOG part 2 exam.
  • MRCOG part 3 exam.

Research / Additional academic publications:

Be able to provide complete details of their employment history. Have evidence that their career progression is consistent with their personal circumstances. Have evidence that their present level of achievement and performance is commensurate with the totality of their period of training. Demonstrable interest in, and understanding of, a career in obstetrics and gynaecology as practiced in the UK.
