Locum Medical Oncology Consultant in Breast & Gynaecology

Job Summary

This is a 6-month Medical Oncology Locum Consultant post with special interests in breast and gynaecological cancers, delivering systemic anti-cancer therapies, with the possibility to extend further. The post will support two established and experienced non-surgical oncology teams and will be based at the Leeds Cancer Centre, St James’s University Hospital.

There will be opportunities to contribute to the MDT and departmental meetings, as well as teaching and service developments. This is an exciting time to join our Breast and Gynaecology Services as we are currently looking at pathway redesigns, alongside developing the services and the team.

Main Duties of the Job

1. Attendance at breast and gynae clinics.
2. Attendance at MDT meetings.
3. Participate in ward rounds and the on-call rota.
4. Prescription of systemic and hormone therapy.
5. Discussion with patients and their relatives.
6. Initiation/change of treatments.
7. Manage patients receiving treatment for breast and gynaecological cancer.
8. Attendance at service and departmental meetings.
9. Work closely with clinical colleagues and support the wider breast and gynae teams with clinical activity.

Job Responsibilities

Objectives of the Post

1. To deliver care to patients with Breast and Gynaecological cancers at the Leeds Cancer Centre, through:
   1. Out-patient clinics
   2. Supervision of patients
   3. Care of in-patients on a 1:3 rota (Gynae ward patients)
   4. Contribute to Specialist Multi-disciplinary team meetings
   5. Contribution to a medical oncology on-call rota 1:14
2. To link with Consultant colleagues in other relevant site specialist teams within the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and across the Yorkshire Cancer Network.
3. To work with colleagues across medical oncology to deliver acute on call (currently 1 in 14). This includes both out-of-hours cover in addition to acute ward rounds during normal working hours.
4. To contribute to research, teaching, and new developments within the Leeds Cancer Centre. The post holder will be encouraged to facilitate and contribute to the current clinical research programs ongoing in the department.

Requirements of the Post

General Training and Qualifications

The appointee must hold accreditation in MB BS, MB ChB or equivalent with the Royal College of Physicians or equivalent and have completed higher specialist training (or equivalent) if currently in a training programme within the UK. Applicants must be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK or have references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director.

Experience

The appointee must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all aspects of medical oncology and appropriate experience in Breast and Gynaecological cancers. It is desirable that the candidates have experience in the conduct of clinical trials.

• Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice.
• Eligibility to work in the UK.
• Is up to date and fit to practise safely.
• All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues.

Clinical, Academic, and Personal Skills

Essential

• Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research.
• Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.
• Well organised and skilled in good time management.
• Effective interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrate ability to relate to and work within a team.

Qualifications

Essential

• MB BS (or equivalent)
• MRCP or equivalent qualification

Desirable

• Higher degree e.g. MD/PhD relevant to the subspecialty
