Locum Consultant in the department of Emergency General Surgery. We are looking for an enthusiastic individual to fill a locum consultant post working within the Leeds Institute of Emergency General Surgery (LIEGS) at the St James University Hospital. A number of our team members are not eligible for traditional substantive appointments and as such we welcome those not eligible to apply for this locum post. Leeds is one of the busiest acute general surgical centres in the UK and as such our case volume, service design and demonstrated committed investment is ensuring the unit continues to develop and remain at the forefront of acute general surgery services, clinically, educationally and academically in the UK.
Main duties of the job
The new consultant in Emergency General Surgery will join our existing team of eleven consultants within the department led by Mr Adam Peckham-Cooper. This innovative, exciting, collaborative and flexible department manages acute general surgery patients during the day and runs an Ambulatory Surgical Centre (ASC), a Surgical Assessment Unit (SAU), elective Rapid Access and emergency theatres. The successful applicant will be encouraged to develop their own personal interests which may include training, teaching, research and management. The unit has developed rapidly over the last four years but continues to present enormous opportunities for embedding Leeds as a national leader for innovation, research and service delivery of emergency and acute care surgery.
Qualifications
- FRCS or equivalent
- On the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted onto the Register for trainees within the UK
- References authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director
- Established skills and competencies in managing unselected Emergency General Surgery patients and related specialties including upper GI, colorectal and hepatobiliary surgery
- Commitment to undergraduate/postgraduate teaching and a research interest desirable
Objectives of the Post
- To deliver high quality, evidence based and compassionate patient care to emergency general surgery patients in Leeds and surrounding areas
- To make a significant contribution to the development, design, improvement and delivery of the Acute Surgical Services in Leeds and surrounding areas, through clinical leadership and collaboration with other key stakeholders
- To contribute to research, teaching and new developments within Emergency General Surgery in Leeds
- To support doctors in training within the department with respect to educational supervision and appraisal and to contribute to undergraduate teaching of students from the University of Leeds
- To support the Trust in its delivery of core services, recognising the importance of local and national standards, in particular delivery of CQC standards, the 4‑hour Emergency Care Standard, same day emergency care and financial sustainability
