Locum Consultant in Clinical Oncology

Job summary

This is a 6-month Clinical Oncology Locum Consultant post with a special interest in breast cancer, delivering systemic anti-cancer therapies and radiotherapy treatment. The post will support an established and experienced non-surgical oncology Breast service and will be based at the Leeds Cancer Centre, St James’s University Hospital.

There will be opportunities to contribute to the MDT and departmental meetings, as well as teaching and service developments. This is an exciting time to join our Breast Service as we are currently looking at pathway redesigns alongside developing the service and the team.

Main duties of the job

1. Attendance at breast and gynae clinics.
2. Attendance at MDT meetings.
3. Participate in ward rounds.
4. Prescription of systemic and hormone therapy.
5. Discussion with patients and their relatives.
6. Initiation/ change of treatments.

Job responsibilities

This is a 10 PA locum appointment for a Consultant Clinical Oncologist, with a special interest in Breast cancer.

This post will deliver 10 PAs supporting the breast radiotherapy and systemic therapy service.

The post will support an established and experienced multi-disciplinary non-surgical Oncology Breast team and will be based at the Leeds Cancer Centre, St James’s University Hospital. The successful candidate will work alongside the non-surgical Oncology breast team which is led by Dr David Jackson and is supported by Professor Chris Twelves, Professor Galina Velikova, Dr Shirin Namini, Dr Indu Chaudhuri, Dr Andrew Viggars, Dr Emma Thomas, Dr Emma Dugdale, and Dr Keren O’Connor.

There will be opportunities to contribute to the central Leeds Breast MDTs and departmental meetings, as well as teaching, research, and service developments. This is an exciting time to join our Breast Service as we are currently looking at pathway redesigns, in addition to developing the services and the wider team.

Objectives of the post

1. To deliver care to patients with Breast cancers at the Leeds Cancer Centre, through:
2. Out-patient clinics
3. Supervision of patients
4. Care of in-patients on a 1:5 rota
5. Contribute to Specialist Multi-disciplinary team meetings
6. To link with Consultant colleagues in other relevant site specialist teams within the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and across the Yorkshire Cancer Network.
7. To contribute to research, teaching, and new developments within the Leeds Cancer Centre. The post holder will be encouraged to facilitate and contribute to the current clinical research programs ongoing in the department.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

• FRCR or equivalent qualification
• Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice.
• Eligibility to work in the UK.
• Is up to date and fit to practise safely
• All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues

Desirable

• Higher degree e.g. MD/PhD relevant to the subspecialty

Experience

Essential

• Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in Clinical Oncology
• Specifically, he/she must demonstrate higher training in the delivery of systemic therapy and radiotherapy for breast cancer
• Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances
• Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.
• Experience of participation in regular clinical audit.
• Understanding of current issues in the NHS.
• Well organised and skilled in good time management.
• Effective interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrate ability to relate to and work within a team.
• Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research.

Desirable

• Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops.
• Attendance at recognised management course.
• Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff.

Additional Requirements

Essential

• Medically fit to fulfil ALL aspects of the post, and to be able to respond quickly to emergencies, as necessary.
• Meets professional health requirements (in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice).
• Applicants must be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK, or have references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director.
