We are delighted to offer 7 full-time Ward Clerk positions within our dynamic Specialty and Integrated Medicine team at St. James University Hospital. Main duties of the job
Specialty and Integrated Medicine (SIM) encompasses a wide range of services within the Trust, including the Centre for Older Adults, HIV Outpatients, Infectious Diseases, General Internal Medicine, and Diabetes and Endocrinology. All of these services form part of Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT). The role will be primarily based at St. James University Hospital, including the Gledhow Wing, Lincoln Wing, and Beckett Wing.
SIM is supported by a large, dedicated, and hardworking team that provides administrative support across 15 wards within the CSU. These include two admission wards, an Infectious Diseases ward, a Diabetes and Endocrinology ward, a General Medicine ward, and several Older Peoples Medicine base wards. As the CSU continues to evolve, with new wards opening and services expanding, the team continues to grow and strengthen.
Our ward clerks work full-time in complementary patterns, collaborating closely and adjusting shifts where necessary to ensure consistent ward coverage, including during periods of annual leave. The team fosters a positive and supportive working environment, where colleagues consistently demonstrate professionalism, teamwork, and a friendly, approachable attitude.

Job responsibilities
Key duties include maintaining and updating PAS and PPM systems, as well as ensuring the accuracy of ward registers. The role involves handling telephone calls and messages from staff, other departments, CSUs, external trusts, and relatives in a timely and professional manner. Responsibilities also include arranging patient transport for discharges, transfers, and inpatient appointments, as well as booking follow-up appointments for discharged patients. Additional administrative tasks include accurately documenting all patient admissions, discharges, and transfers, monitoring and maintaining adequate ward stock levels, ordering necessary equipment, and reporting any faults or maintenance issues promptly. The role requires providing administrative support to the nurse in charge, contributing to the efficient day-to-day operation of the ward. This includes supporting processes that ensure the smooth and timely movement of patients through the department, in line with emergency care standards.
