Applications are invited for one Specialty Doctor (Trust Grade) post in Paediatric Surgery, equivalent to ST3 to ST8 level. The post is offered for an initial 6-month period, starting no later than 1st October 2026, with the possibility of extension.

This Paediatric Surgical Trust Grade Doctor position within the Department of Paediatric Surgery will be tailored to an individual's training requirement. The routine work includes care of patients in the Leeds General Infirmary, attendance at theatre lists and out-patient clinics where areas of need for sub-specialisation will be addressed with their supervising consultant. These will need to be clearly defined from the outset by the successful candidate.

The post is full time and the appointee will be expected to take part in the Specialist Registrar out of hours rota, currently 1:10. The majority of the out of hours involves general Paediatric surgery, Neonatal surgery and Trauma. The candidate will therefore be expected to have background training in Paediatric Surgery to a high level.

The department provides a wide range of General and specialist Paediatric surgery including minimal invasive surgery and robotic surgery. These posts would benefit applicants who are committed to a career in Paediatric surgery with (for ST3+) some experience at higher StR grade or those who have completed their training and desire further specialist training in Paediatric Surgical sub-specialties.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will participate in a rolling 1:10 on-call rota at registrar level. When on call, they will act as Registrar of the Week from Monday to Thursday, and undertake one 24-hour on-call period with appropriate rest days rostered in line with working time regulations. During on-call periods, the post holder will take senior responsibility for the assessment and management of emergency referrals and all aspects of inpatient care. They will also undertake emergency operating, with consultant support available at all times, and will liaise with other specialties as required. When not on call, the post holder will contribute to the wider paediatric surgical service. This includes regular participation in elective and emergency theatre lists, outpatient clinics, multidisciplinary team meetings, teaching and supervision of junior trainees, and involvement in audit, research and quality-improvement activities. Training opportunities will be tailored to the individual's learning needs and the available subspecialty rotations within the department.
