We are inviting applications to fill our Trust Doctor vacancy at The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in the Department of Anaesthesia. This post will commence as soon as possible and is fixed term for one year. Candidates must be fully registered with the General Medical Council and hold a license to practice by the intended start date.

Main duties of the job:

  • The successful applicant will have regular training lists across a broad spectrum of specialties as mutually agreed at interview and will contribute to the out of hours service by being part of the on call team alongside the anaesthetic trainees.
  • All out of hours call rotas at Leeds are a 1 in 8 working pattern and are compliant with European Working Time Directive legislation and the 2016 contract.
  • When not working out of hours, successful applicants will have a mixture of consultant supervised and solo lists (where appropriate).

Levels of responsibility:

  • The successful candidate will mainly have supervised theatre lists with Consultant trainers but it is envisaged that the candidate will have the opportunity to develop their own confidence in their areas of interest and work with local supervision independently.
  • The successful applicant will have a named consultant supervisor and undergo regular appraisal and actively take part in the GMC revalidation process.

Teaching and research/study and training:

  • The post can provide the applicant experience in anaesthetic subspecialty blocks not available in most hospitals subject to availability.
  • It is envisaged that such experience if appropriately documented and supported with work placed based assessments and regular appraisal would be of benefit to those seeking to join speciality training in Anaesthesia.

Our department provides anaesthetic and critical care provision across all the hospitals covering Major General Surgery, Urology, Gynaecology, Cardiac, Thoracics, Transplant (liver and kidney), Ophthalmics, Vascular, Neuro, ENT, Maxillo facial surgery, Trauma and Plastic Surgery and training in general, neuro and cardiac intensive care medicine.

The successful candidate will join a team of over 150 Anaesthetic staff including more than 130 consultants and over 50 trainee anaesthetists. Full details of the department and staff are included in the induction pack for successful candidates.

There is an excellent range of postgraduate medical activities at Leeds Teaching Hospitals directed by the PGME centre which has bases at both the Leeds General Infirmary and St James's University Hospital. Leeds Teaching Hospitals is the main provider of postgraduate training in Anaesthesia in the West Yorkshire region. As such we have extensive experience of supporting and preparing trainees in their professional goals of achieving the FRCA examinations and securing consultant positions. We have a highly skilled and motivated consultant body who maintain a strong interest in teaching, training and examining, and this culture will be of benefit to those wishing to complete FRCA examinations.

The Leeds Teaching Hospitals is the principal teaching hospital for the Medical School at the University of Leeds and the post holder will be encouraged to participate fully in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. This post is for an initial term of 1 year with the option to extend if mutually agreeable.

Person Specification:

  • Qualifications: MBBS or equivalent medical qualification, Primary FRCA examination or equivalent, Be eligible for full registration with, and hold a current licence to practise from, the GMC at intended start date, Eligibility to work in the UK, Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent (as required to complete Foundation competences) by intended start date, Is up to date and fit to practise safely and is aware of own training needs.
  • All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients & colleagues demonstrated by one of the following: Applicants have undertaken undergraduate medical training in English. OR Achieved minimum score of 7 across all 4 of the following categories in the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in a single sitting within 24 months at time of application: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. (An overall minimum score of 7.5) OR Achieved the minimum Grade B across all 4 of the following categories in the Occupational English Test (OET) in medicine in a single sitting within 24 months at time of application: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. (You must provide your candidate number).
  • If applicants believe they have adequate communication skills, but do not have evidence in one of the above forms, they must provide alternative supporting evidence of language skills.

Experience:

  • 36 months experience after full GMC registration or equivalent, and evidence of achievement of foundation competences, in line with GMC standards / Good Medical Practice; including: make the care of your patient your first concern, provide a good standard of practice and care, take prompt action if you think that patient safety, dignity or comfort is being compromised, protect and promote the health of patients and of the public, treat patients as individuals and respect their dignity, work in partnership with patients, work with colleagues in the ways that best serve patients interests, be honest and open and act with integrity, never discriminate unfairly against patients or colleagues, never abuse your patients trust in you or the public's trust in the profession.
  • Evidence of achievement of Core competencies in Anaesthesia or equivalent experience (Stage 1 RCOA curriculum in Anaesthetic training).
  • Obstetric Anaesthesia Experience (Minimum 6 months).
  • Ability to apply sound clinical knowledge and judgement to problems.
  • Ability to prioritise clinical need.
  • Ability to maximise safety and minimise risk.
  • Recognition of, and ability to undertake the initial management of, an acutely ill patient.
  • Abilities consistent with an Anaesthetic trainee having completed their Stage 1 training or equivalent.
  • Evidence of competence to work without direct supervision.
  • Demonstrates understanding of research, including awareness of ethical issues.
  • Demonstrates understanding of the basic principles of audit, clinical risk management, evidence-based practice, patient safety, and clinical quality improvement initiatives.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of evidence-informed practice.
  • Ability to provide complete details of employment history. Evidence that career progression is consistent with personal circumstances.
  • Evidence that present achievement and performance is commensurate with totality of their period of training.
  • At least 2 years experience in Anaesthesia by the time of intended start date.
  • Experience working within the NHS, IACOAAptitude for practical skills.
  • Successful completion of relevant skills courses.
  • Research and audit skills: Evidence of relevant academic and research achievements, e.g. degrees, prizes, awards, distinctions, publications, presentations, other achievements.
  • Evidence of involvement in an audit project, a quality improvement project, formal research project or other activity which focuses on patient safety and clinical improvement demonstrates an interest in and commitment to the specialty beyond the mandatory curriculum.
  • Teaching: Evidence of interest in, and experience of teaching. Evidence of feedback for teaching. Instructor status (or a recommendation for instructor status) in an advanced life support course (ALS, ATLS, EPLS, APLS) or equivalent course.
