We are inviting applications to fill our Trust Doctor vacancy at The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in the Department of Anaesthesia. This post will commence as soon as possible and is fixed term for two years. Candidates must be fully registered with the General Medical Council and hold a licence to practice by the intended start date.

Main duties of the job

  • The successful applicant will have regular training lists across a broad spectrum of specialties as mutually agreed at interview.
  • Contribute to the out of hours service by being part of the on‑call team alongside the anaesthetic trainees.
  • All out of hours call rotas at Leeds are a 1 in 8 working pattern and are compliant with European Working Time Directive legislation and the 2016 contract.
  • When not working out of hours, successful applicants will have a mixture of consultant supervised and solo lists (where appropriate).
  • The successful candidate will mainly have supervised theatre lists with consultant trainers, but it is envisaged that the candidate will have the opportunity to develop their own confidence in their areas of interest and work with local supervision independently.
  • The successful applicant will have a named consultant supervisor and undergo regular appraisal and actively take part in the GMC revalidation process.
  • This post can provide the applicant experience in anaesthetic subspecialty blocks not available in most hospitals subject to availability.

Our department provides anaesthetic and critical care provision across all the hospitals, covering Major General Surgery, Urology, Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Cardiac, Thoracic, Paediatrics, Transplant (liver and kidney), Ophthalmic, Breast, Endocrine, Vascular, Neuro, ENT, Maxillo‑facial surgery, Trauma and Plastic Surgery and training in general, neuro and cardiac intensive care medicine.

Job responsibilities

  • Regular training lists across a broad spectrum of specialties as agreed at interview.
  • Contribution to the out of hours service as part of the on‑call team alongside anaesthetic trainees.
  • Mixture of consultant supervised and solo lists when not working out of hours.
  • Main: supervised theatre lists with consultant trainers.
  • Opportunity to develop confidence in areas of interest and work with local supervision independently.
  • Named consultant supervisor, regular appraisal, participation in GMC revalidation.
  • Specific training requirements and educational goals defined during meetings.
  • Access to anaesthetic subspecialty blocks, postgraduate medical activities directed by the PGME centre at Leeds General Infirmary and St James’s University Hospital, and support for achieving FRCA examinations and securing consultant positions.

Conditions of Service

This post is covered by the Hospital Medical and Dental Staff (England and Wales) Terms and Conditions of Service. The post holder is required to be fully registered with the GMC and hold a licence to practice.

Standards of Conduct and Behaviour

You are required to work to the standards set out by the General Medical Council in Good Medical Practice, including protecting patients when their safety, dignity or comfort is compromised and following the Trust’s procedures.

Leave Arrangements

All leave should be applied for in accordance with the Trust’s Leave Policy, normally giving six weeks notice of any leave, other than in exceptional circumstances.

Training and Development

The job holder must take responsibility for their personal development, ensuring CPD remains a priority and undertaking all mandatory training required for the role.

Health & Safety

All staff must maintain and improve the quality of services, comply with Trust policies, including Health and Safety policies, and report incidents using the Trust Incident Reporting system.

Rehabilitation of Offenders Act & DBS Disclosure

This position requires access to patients and is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975. A DBS disclosure is required and may affect the offer of appointment.

Compliance with infection control policies and universal precautions, including hand hygiene before and after contact with patients.

Person Specification

Experience

  • 36 months experience after full GMC registration or equivalent, including evidence of achievement of foundation competences and GMC standards / Good Medical Practice.
  • Experience in Anaesthesia or equivalent, including core competencies (Stage 1 RCOA curriculum).
  • Obstetric Anaesthesia experience (minimum 6 months).
  • Experience working within the NHS.

  • Advanced Life Support Certificate (Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent) by intended start date.
  • Fit to practise safely and aware of training needs.
  • Demonstrable written and spoken English: Undergraduate medical training in English, or IELTS: minimum score 7 across all four categories, or overall 7.5, within 24 months.
  • OET: minimum Grade B across all four categories, or overall 7.5, within 24 months.
  • Alternative evidence if required.

Clinical, Academic, and Personal Skills

  • Apply sound clinical knowledge and judgement to problems.
  • Prioritise clinical need; maximise safety and minimise risk.
  • Initial management of acutely ill patients.
  • Work without direct supervision; knowledge of research ethics.
  • Understand audit, clinical risk, evidence‑based practice and clinical quality improvement.
  • Provide complete employment history; career progression consistent with circumstances.
  • At least 2 years experience in Anaesthesia by intended start date.
  • Practical skills aptitude; completion of relevant skills courses.
  • Research and audit skills: evidence of academic achievements, publications, presentations.
  • Teaching: interest and experience in teaching; feedback evidence.
  • Instructor status (or recommendation) in advanced life support courses.

Qualifications

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Primary FRCA examination or equivalent.
