We have an exciting opportunity for a Band 5 Registered Nurse (experienced and newly qualified) who are highly motivated and enthusiastic to join our very busy outpatient departments across St James Hospital at Leeds Teaching Hospital (LTHT).

The successful candidate will be flexible, able to work effectively as part of a team and manage the pressure of working in very busy environments. LTHT delivers 1.3 million outpatient appointments across its 5 Hospital sites and virtually yearly. Postholders will work closely with medical, nurse specialists and admin staff, to provide a smooth caring and efficient service for patients.

As a Staff Nurse, your main responsibilities will include:

  • Providing excellent care for patients
  • Managing clinic flow
  • Supervising and mentoring junior staff and students on placement

To be successful at recruitment you must be able to deal with the public in a sensitive and polite manner, and be flexible in your approach to duties of work. Please note that the hours of work are Monday to Friday. There may be the need for planned weekend working as service delivery requires. Full and part-time hours are available to suitable candidates.

Main duties of the job:

The jobholder will work within an environment caring for adult patients who are attending Multi-speciality Outpatient service at St James Hospital. This would include the MSO unit and Bexley Wing outpatient clinics. The main responsibilities include:

  • Managing patient flow
  • Undertaking investigations including phlebotomy
  • Ensuring excellent standard of care is delivered
  • Taking charge in absence of department manager
  • Providing educational opportunities and support to junior staff, new starters and students

Job responsibilities:

JOB PURPOSE: To provide and be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of individualised programmes of care. To deliver care without supervision. To take charge of the department as necessary in the absence of the Sister or Charge Nurse. To participate in the in-service training, preceptorship and mentorship of junior staff, post-basic learners and students. To take responsibility as the prime care provider for a group of patients. To promote confidence in our commitment to provide excellent compassionate patient care.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Qualifications: Registered Adult Nurse (Level 1 or 2)
  • Training: Ability to demonstrate and explain skills to other staff. Willing to undergo relevant training as necessary.
  • Skills: Literate and numerate. Ability to perform accurate drug calculations. Competent in written and verbal communication skills. Competent in the use of information technology. Able to organise and prioritise workload. Understand the skills and knowledge required to develop team members.
  • Knowledge: Current issues in healthcare. Standards of Professional Practice.

Person Specification:

Experience: Current issues in health care. Awareness of speciality.

Qualifications: Registered Adult Nurse (Level 1 or 2). Has current registration on the appropriate part of the NMC register.

Additional Requirements:

  • Good written and verbal skills
  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload
  • Able to provide and be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of individualised programmes of care
  • Able to fulfil Occupational Health requirements for the post (with reasonable adjustments if necessary), including clearance on blood borne viruses in compliance with Trust Policy
  • Ability to travel in between Trust premises and patient homes for posts that involve community visits
