Senior Clinical Fellow in Anaesthesia in Leeds

We are inviting applications to fill our Senior Clinical Fellow vacancy at The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in the Department of Anaesthesia. This post will commence as soon as possible and is a fixed term for two years. Candidates must be fully registered with the General Medical Council and hold a license to practice by the intended start date.

Main duties of the job: The successful applicant will have regular training lists across a broad spectrum of specialties as agreed at interview and will be expected to contribute to the out‑of‑hours service as part of the on‑call team alongside anaesthetic trainees. All out‑of‑hours call rotas are compliant with the European Working Time Directive legislation and the 2016 contract. When not working out‑of‑hours, the successful applicant will have a mixture of consultant‑supervised and solo lists (where appropriate).

Levels of responsibility: The successful candidate will mainly have supervised theatre lists with consultant trainers, but it is envisaged that they will have the opportunity to develop their own confidence in their areas of interest and work with local supervision independently. The successful applicant will have a named consultant educational supervisor and undergo regular appraisal, actively taking part in the GMC revalidation process. During these meetings any specific training requirements and educational goals can be defined.

Teaching, research, study and training: The post can provide experience in anaesthetic subspecialty blocks not available in most hospitals, subject to availability. We have a strong track record of supporting doctors through the portfolio pathway. If successful applicants wish to pursue this route, we will be fully supportive and facilitate access to all required training modules. There is an excellent range of postgraduate medical activities directed by the PGME centre, based at both the Leeds General Infirmary and St. James University Hospital.

About us: Leeds Teaching Hospitals is one of the largest NHS Trusts in the UK, with 3,215 beds and over 15,000 staff employed across six sites, serving the UK's fifth largest city. The department provides anaesthetic and critical care provision across all hospitals covering Major General Surgery, Urology, Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Cardiac, Thoracic, Paediatrics, Transplant (liver and kidney), Ophthalmic, Breast, Endocrine, Vascular, Neuro, ENT, Maxillo‑facial surgery, Trauma and Plastic Surgery, and training in general, neuro and cardiac intensive care medicine. The successful candidate will join a team of over 150 anaesthetic staff, including more than 130 consultants and over 50 trainee anaesthetists.

Clinical, Academic, and Personal Skills: Ability to apply sound clinical knowledge and judgement to problems. Abilities consistent with an anaesthetic trainee having completed their ST5 grade of training or equivalent. Evidence of Logbook indicating experience of appropriate number of clinical cases and procedures. Evidence of competence to work without direct supervision. Demonstrates understanding of research, including awareness of ethical issues. Demonstrates understanding of the basic principles of audit, clinical risk management, evidence‑based practice, patient safety and clinical quality improvement initiatives. Demonstrates knowledge of evidence‑informed practice. Ability to provide complete details of employment history and evidence that career progression is consistent with personal circumstances. At least 2 years’ experience in anaesthesia by the time of intended start date. Successful completion of relevant skills courses. Research and audit skills: Evidence of relevant academic and research achievements. Evidence of involvement in an audit project, a quality improvement project, formal research project or other activity focusing on patient safety and clinical improvement. Teaching: Evidence of interest in, and experience of teaching. Instructor status or recommendation for instructor status in an advanced life support course (ALS, ATLS, EPLS, APLS) or equivalent. Extracurricular activities / achievements relevant to the specialty.

Eligibility, Fitness to practice, and Language Skills: Be eligible for full registration with, and hold a current licence to practise from, the GMC at intended start date. Eligibility to work in the UK. Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent by intended start date. Is up to date and fit to practise safely. All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics. Applicants have undertaken undergraduate medical training in English, OR achieved minimum IELTS score of 7 across all 4 categories (overall 7.5), OR achieved minimum OET Grade B across all 4 categories in medicine. Provide alternative supporting evidence of language skills if needed.

Qualifications: MBBS or equivalent medical qualification. Final FRCA examination or equivalent.

Experience: Minimum of 72 months experience after full GMC registration. Experience in the NHS in anaesthesia within the last 3 years. Evidence of minimum 5 years anaesthetic training (within or outside the UK). Minimum of 6 months of obstetric anaesthesia experience. Evidence of completion of IAC and IAOC or equivalent Stage 2 sign‑off on LLP. Ability to demonstrate relevant competencies through SLE or WBA or comparable evidence.
