Radiographer [Degree Apprentice] (XR05) in Leeds

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a suitable candidate to join the Ultrasound team as an Apprentice Sonographer. The post offers the successful candidate the opportunity to train as a Sonographer whilst also working for the Trust under annex 30 T&C's at band 5 level. The training will be provided at Sheffield Hallam University and at completion will award a BSc (Hons) Medical Ultrasound. Main duties of the job:

• The successful candidate will be working within the Ultrasound team and will be required to work across all hospital sites during their training.
• Provide high quality patient care.
• Commitment to learn and complete the required training for the degree award.
• Support the service as an assistant if required.
• Independent learning with 1 day per week supported learning time.
• On completion of the course, the successful candidate will be expected to offer a minimum of 2 years employment to the Trust.
• To progress to senior pay bands (band 7 and above), the candidate needs to be aware that they would be required to complete further post graduate training (PgCert).
• Candidates must be willing and able to attend Sheffield Hallam University on a regular basis.

Job responsibilities:

• Work to local protocols.
• Ensure patients have given informed consent prior to radiographic examinations and where necessary advise them of the potential risks.
• Apply a high level of manual dexterity in acquiring accurate, high quality diagnostic images, adapting standard technique when necessary.
• Operate advanced software on specialist radiological equipment, requiring excellent hand-eye co-ordination and manual dexterity.
• Review images and seek advice when additional images may be required, prior to patient departure from the department.
• Ensure that images are presented for reporting purposes in a timely and accurate manner.
• Recognise and identify radiographic abnormalities, following training and authorisation.
• Prepare and clear away preparation trolleys for contrast examinations.
• Ensure appropriate infection control measures are utilised.
• Responsible for the care, comfort and clinical well-being of the patient during the radiological examination.
• Liaison with safeguarding and external agencies when suspicion of patient in danger.
• Participate in the safe transfer of patients and equipment within the department.
• Communicate negotiated changes to staff rosters to a senior radiographer.
• Organise personal workload in line with clinical priorities.
• Report deficits in the data integrity of the Radiology Information System (RIS) and Picture Archiving Communication System (PACS).
• Enter accurate patient and examination data into RIS and maintain accurate records at all times.
• Understand the contingencies required when electronic systems fail.
• Ensure that equipment faults are reported to the relevant Senior Radiographer.
• Assist in regular Quality Assurance (QA), including equipment testing.
• Wear personal protective equipment when required.
• Care for, check and maintain high standards of cleanliness of clinical equipment.
• Ensure safe disposal of linen and clinical waste from the department.
• Assess specific communication needs of individual patients.
• Communicate effectively and empathetically with patients and their escorts.
• Work as part of the multi-disciplinary team within and without the radiology department.
• Act as a source of information for Radiology Assistants and students.
• Maintain effective verbal and/or written communication and working relationships.
• Ensure that the confidentiality of all information gained is safeguarded.
• Recognise and report when a patient's well-being may be at risk.
• Participate in ethically approved audit projects.

Person Specification:

• Qualifications - Essential Criteria:
• GCSE Maths, English and a Science subject Level 2 or above.
• Evidence of successful formal study at level 3.
• Working towards BSc (or equivalent) in Medical Ultrasound.
• Experience:
• A minimum of six months experience in a health and social care capacity.
• Skills & behaviours:
• Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to maintain a safe working environment.
• High level of manual dexterity required.
• Computer skills e.g. advanced keyboard and mouse skills.
