This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the largest and successful Teaching Hospitals in the UK with an international reputation and tradition of innovation. As a dedicated well-established theatre suite, we consist of 4 theatres for a variety of specialties including Thoracic, Gynae Oncology, HPB and upper GI. We also carry out Robotic surgery in these specialties.

The successful candidate will be a Registered Practitioner (ODP / RN). Candidates should have broad based operating theatre experience, ideally including knowledge of the clinical specialty, with a keen eye on developments within the service. The successful candidate will demonstrate Leeds Way values and work in an open and collaborative way, empowering the team to provide the highest standards of harm free care which is patient centred and fair to all stakeholders. The successful candidate will manage a diverse team of thirty-five theatre practitioners.

Main duties of the job:

  • The Team Leader will support the Matron in the delivery of theatre objectives and will be responsible and accountable for managing capacity and staffing resources over the 24-hour period.
  • The role will be 70% non-clinical management and 30% clinical management.
  • The Jobholder will carry 24 hour continuing responsibility for the effective and efficient management of the Theatre(s) and provide management and professional leadership for the peri-operative team.
  • As a team leader you will continue to maintain clinical practice and there may be some requirement for weekend working if needed.
  • The jobholder is responsible for ensuring the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care are maintained to a high standard.
  • The jobholder will manage the administrative and financial aspects of the Theatre(s) and will ensure cost effective use of resources and deployment of staff.

Current services comprise four operating theatres. The role requires direct management of approximately 35 whole time equivalent Peri-operative Practitioners and support staff. The jobholder is responsible for the department clinical budget.

Job responsibilities:

  • The Jobholder will carry 24 hour continuing responsibility for the effective and efficient management of the department.
  • Providing management and professional leadership for the peri-operative team.
  • The jobholder is responsible for ensuring the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care are maintained to a high standard.
  • Managing the administrative and financial aspects of the department.
  • The jobholder will ensure cost effective use of resources.
  • The jobholder will participate in mentorship and teaching programmes for multi-disciplinary groups within the department.
  • The jobholder will act as a role model, promoting quality evidence-based practice, developing the peri-operative team and ensuring effective management of the department in the absence of the Matron / Theatre Manager.

Person Specification:

  • Qualifications: Registered Nurse (Level 1) or Registered Operating Department Practitioner, Recognised teaching/assessing qualification, Evidence of continued professional development, Willing to undergo training as necessary.
  • Additional Requirements: Excellent written and verbal skills, Ability to organise and prioritise own and others workload, Understanding of skills and knowledge required to lead and develop team members, Influencing and negotiation, Communication, Clinical Leadership, Teaching, Management, Able to fulfil Occupational Health requirements for post.
  • Skills & behaviours: Communication skills, Teaching and assessment skills, Excellent interpersonal skills, Assertiveness, Flexibility, adaptable, capable of lateral thinking, Ability to manage and identify stress in self and others, Conflict management, Ability to work in a stressful environment.
  • Experience: Substantial Post registration Experience at Specialist Peri-operative Practitioner grade or equivalent, Experience of managing and leading a team, Budget management audit & Standard Setting, Current issues in healthcare, Understanding of the local and national NHS agenda, At least 18 months at Band 6 or equivalent, Awareness of Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust guidelines and policies, Understanding of organisational structures.
