Applications are invited to apply for a locum appointment to a Consultant Cardiologist with a specialist interest in PCI post. The post holder will flexibly deliver 8.5 PAs of emergency, inpatient and outpatient care of patients with ischaemic heart disease, with a further 1.5 PA allocated SPA time. The post will be based at Leeds General Infirmary, one of the largest tertiary cardiac centres in the UK, with a team of 33 Cardiologists serving a population of over 3 million. There are 7 state of the art Cardiac Cath Labs, performing 2800 PCIs (including 1100 primary PCI), 600 TAVI, 900 ablations/studies and 700 device procedures per annum, making Leeds one of the highest volume UK units. The PCI team provides a full range of advanced coronary interventions, including a high-volume CTO service, atherectomy, laser, lithotripsy, IVUS, OCT, FFR, CFR etc. In addition, ICC, advanced imaging, cardiac MRI, adult congenital, paediatric and interventional paediatric cardiology, as well as adult and paediatric cardiac surgical services, all complement each other within the same site. The department consists of 2 inpatient wards, a day case interventional ward, a daycase seated suite, 6 lab catheter suite (+1 paediatric lab), cardiacinvestigation unit and a 10 bed CCU. The post is fixed term for 6 months starting April 2026, with options to extend if mutually agreed. The purpose of this appointment is to cover a vacated position within the Interventional Cardiology Team.
Main duties of the job
The successful appointee will join the existing rostered direct clinical activity delivered by the interventional team supported by a team of 10 other Cardiologists (6 PCI, 4 Structural and 1 Research). This includes:
- Acute Clinical Work
Monday-Friday in-hours acute coronary service, assessing and managing acute coronary syndrome and coronary intervention patients on CCU and the Cardiology ward, supported by the General Cardiology consultant on-call. (1 in 8.5) Weekday acute cath lab PCI rota Monday-Thursday 8am to 6pm. (1 in 10) Out-of-hours coronary intervention rota. (1 in 5 weekday night on-call, 1 in 10 weekend on-call (24 hours Friday and Sunday))
- Elective Clinical Work
Regular elective cath lab PCI sessions. Regular outpatient clinic activity. The posts have no on call commitment for Acute Medicine.

Job responsibilities
OBJECTIVES OF THE POST
The main objective is to contribute to the delivery of the coronary intervention service. Applicants with experience in complex coronary intervention will be encouraged. To deliver direct care to patients by providing:
The appointee will join the existing out-of-hours coronary intervention rota, which will involve 1 weekday night on-call every 5 weeks and 1 weekend on-call every 10 weeks. Weekends will consist of 24 hours Friday and Sunday. The Sunday shift will include an Acute List for urgent inpatients during daytime (8am - 6pm), followed by non-resident on-call for Emergency PCI 6pm to 8am. The emergency PCI service between 8am Saturday and 8am Sunday is currently provided by a separate rota of interventional cardiologists based outside Leeds. There is appropriate time off after weekend and overnight working.
The appointee will join the existing weekday acute PCI rota Monday-Thursday 8am to 6pm (1 in 10). The appointee will join with colleagues in delivering a Monday-Friday in-hours acute coronary service, assessing and managing acute coronary syndrome and coronary intervention patients on CCU and the Cardiology ward, supported by the General Cardiology consultant on-call. This will be two weeks in seventeen (1 in 8.5). There is a separate consultant on call rota for General Cardiology. A third Cardiology on call rota for Electrophysiology. The post has no on call commitment for Acute Medicine.
The appointees will undertake out-patient clinics focused on rapid access chest pain referrals and specialist management of ACS/coronary intervention patients. There will be contribution to the elective interventional service with regular cath lab sessions. To link with consultant colleagues in other relevant site specialist teams within the Cardiology department and across the Cardio-Respiratory CSU. To contribute to research, teaching and new developments within the Cardiology department. The post holder will be encouraged to facilitate and contribute to the current clinical research programs ongoing in the department.
Person Specification
Eligibility, Fitness to practice, and Language Skills
- Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice

- Is up to date and fit to practise safely
- Have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues
Qualifications
- MB BS (or equivalent)
Experience
- Should have completed a recognised training programme in Cardiology
- Should have completed a recognised 2-year subspecialty training programme in interventional cardiology
- Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances
- Must demonstrate higher subspecialty experience in interventional cardiology
- Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in cardiology to provide consultant level on-call, specifically Dedicated Interventional Fellow training programme for 1 year
- Experience in complex coronary intervention e.g. rotational atherectomy, OCT/IVUS, left main stem PCI, bifurcation PCI
- Attendance at recognised management course
