Applications are invited for Junior Clinical Fellow (JCF) positions within the Specialty and Integrated Medicine Clinical Service Unit at St James's University Hospital, Leeds. They are ideally suited to post-Foundation Year 2 junior doctors who have yet to decide their chosen career pathway or who are not yet ready to enter a formal training scheme. Our JCF posts, which are fixed‑term for 12‑months from 5th August 2026, are designed to provide excellent clinical training in Acute, General, and Elderly Medicine.

Successful applicants will be given an opportunity to work within our Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) service, on our Acute Medical Units, on our in‑patient Specialty Wards, and in our Centre for Reconditioning. In addition, the postholder will be asked to contribute to our exciting Research and Innovation (R&I) programme, and will be supported to develop a specialist interest in one (or more) of the following areas: medical management, quality improvement, teaching and education, simulation. Each JCF will be allocated a named Educational Supervisor with whom they will develop a tailored training and R&I plan. This will involve ring‑fenced time to pursue their non‑clinical interest.

Candidates must be fully registered with the General Medical Council and hold a licence to practice by the intended start date. Salary is subject to 2026 Pay Award.

Main duties of the job

  • Postholders will contribute to all aspects of the Specialty and Integrated Medicine service.
  • We expect a particular focus on good clinical care; maintaining good medical practice; good relationships and communication with patients; good working relationships with colleagues; good teaching and training; professional behaviour and probity.
  • The ideal applicants for these positions will therefore be able to demonstrate excellent clinical, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • They will be able to work cooperatively with colleagues across our multidisciplinary teams, managing their time effectively.
  • The successful applicant will be committed to providing expert medical care, including discharge planning, for patients presenting with a wide range of acute and chronic conditions.
  • In addition to specialist interest time, opportunities will be provided for education and continuing professional development each week.
  • Post‑holders will be asked to contribute to an out‑of‑hours rota providing cover for SDEC and medical admissions.

You will join the Specialty and Integrated Medicine (SIM) and Urgent Care Clinical Service Units (CSUs) at St James’s University Hospital (SJUH), which together cover Acute Internal Medicine, General Internal Medicine, Elderly Medicine, Diabetes & Endocrinology, and Infectious Diseases & Travel Medicine. Although postholders will undertake most of their clinical duties within their chosen parent specialty, they may be asked to contribute to the care of patients in all these areas from time to time.

Our department at SJUH is currently based across Chancellors Wing and Gledhow Wing. It comprises four Acute Medical Units (one of which incorporates a High Observation Unit (HOBS)), a SDEC service (with both Medical and Older Person’s Units), two General Medicine / Diabetes & Endocrinology wards, five Elderly Medicine wards, and an Infectious Diseases & Travel Medicine Unit. Excellent experience will be provided in ambulatory care, the management of acutely ill patients, on‑going in‑patient care, rehabilitation, and discharge planning.

We have very good links with Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust, especially with the Community Care Beds, and run a large number of specialist out‑patient clinics. The department is hard‑working, friendly and co‑operative. There is a strong focus on continual improvement, multi‑disciplinary teamwork, clinical excellence, and patient safety and quality. There are excellent training facilities at St James’s. Across the CSUs, educational meetings are held on most days of the week.

What you will bring to the role

  • Ensure high quality and safe care of patients within the department, resulting in excellent clinical outcomes.
  • Contribute directly to patient care by, for example, reviewing patients, organising investigations and acting on results, initiating and changing treatment, and speaking to patients and their relatives/carers about their illness and clinical progress.
  • Undertake essential administrative duties, including prescribing, writing electronic discharge letters, and liaising with colleagues in primary care.
  • Contribute to a multidisciplinary approach to patient care, working collaboratively with a large team of allied healthcare professionals, including the Early Discharge Assessment Team, specialist nurses and physiotherapists.
  • Be provided with ring‑fenced time to pursue a specialist interest in medical management, quality improvement, teaching and education, or simulation.

This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
