Junior Charge Nurse/Sister in Leeds

The jobholder will play an essential role assisting the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse with the 24‑hour continuing responsibility for the effective and efficient management of the ward/department. They will contribute to the provision of professional, clinical, managerial leadership and supervision for the nursing team.

Main duties of the job

• The jobholder will assist in co‑ordinating activities on the ward or department, ensuring effective communication is maintained at all times and providing support to qualified and unqualified nurses within the ward/department.
• They will play a key role in the assessment of patient care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care.
• In the absence of the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse the jobholder will act as a role model, promoting quality evidence‑based practice, developing the nursing team and ensuring effective management of the ward/department.

Team environment

Ward J82 is a 32‑bedded unit within the Abdominal Medicine & Surgery CSU, specialising in the care of patients with pancreatic and upper gastrointestinal conditions. The patients can be both elective and acute, and due to the acuity and co‑morbidities of our patient groups, we work as part of a wide multidisciplinary team which includes the clinical teams, ACPs, dieticians, physiotherapy team, and colleagues in critical care and outreach. We are a comparatively large nursing team of over 40 individuals, but through supportive leadership and a professional, can‑do attitude we deliver evidence‑based best practices and care that feels like a close‑knit team.

Job responsibilities

• Provide and be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of individualised programmes of care.
• Deliver care without supervision and take responsibility as the prime care provider for a group of patients, promoting confidence in excellent, compassionate patient care.
• Take charge of the ward or department as necessary in the absence of the Sister or Charge Nurse.
• Participate in in‑service training, preceptorship and mentorship of junior staff, post‑basic learners and students, while maintaining personal development.
• Work within an environment caring for adult surgical patients, primarily those undergoing pancreatic and upper gastrointestinal procedures and management for both long‑ and short‑term conditions.
