It is our pleasure to announce that the Antenatal Wards/Maternity Assessment Centres are now recruiting core staff. We are seeking experienced and enthusiastic Midwives who are passionate about antenatal care and dedicated to enhancing the experience of our service users.

We are looking for midwives with:

Main duties of the job:

As a Band 6 Core Midwife, you will:

  • Provide leadership and oversight of the ward in the absence of the Team Leader.
  • Act as a role model for junior staff and students, supporting their development.
  • Contribute to quality improvement initiatives within the antenatal setting.
  • Take responsibility for a specific role within the team, such as:
  • Staff and student off-duty rota management
  • Junior staff appraisals
  • Infection Prevention & Control (IPC) lead
  • Friends and Family lead
  • Audit and safeguarding responsibilities
  • Inclusivity and staff morale initiatives
  • Mental Health First Aider

Job responsibilities:

The post holder is responsible for the assessment of care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care, and may be required to teach other midwives and non-midwifery staff. They take responsibility as the prime care provider for a group of women.

The post holder is a prime care provider who is required to practice clinical skills developed through experience but at a more advanced level than required for those who have just qualified as midwives. The post holder is designated to take charge of a ward in the absence of the person who has continuing responsibility.

The maternity unit has approximately 10,000 births a year. LTHT is a tertiary referral centre for both obstetrics and neonatology. Other specialities within the hospital that impact on the maternity unit are feto-maternal medicine, adult and neonatal cardiology, neonatal surgery and a reproductive medicine unit.

The post holder will work within the maternity unit or community, caring for women and their babies before, during and after pregnancy depending on the area. They will participate in internal rotation throughout the maternity units and cover both day and night shifts.

The midwife maintains personal contact with women and meets their needs on an individual basis by listening, assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care. Is aware of the anxieties of women and their families and the support they may need. The midwife ensures that the appropriate practitioner is informed promptly of a complication or change in the mother's or baby's condition.

The midwife ensures effective communication with health care professionals and other personnel to ensure continued care to the patient and assists in the smooth running of the ward or area. Reports on the changes occurring in treatment and client needs during the shift and is prepared to work in areas of the midwifery service other than where based in order to meet the requirements of the service.

The jobholder must comply with the wearing of PPE as appropriate to the clinical situation - this may involve wearing face masks for a considerable length of time.

Person Specification:

Experience:

  • Significant experience as a midwife or equivalent within speciality.
  • To have completed at least 18 months as a band 6 RM (excluding significant leave).
  • Have completed at least one rotation as a band 6 on either AN/PN.
  • Have completed at least one rotation on either DS or Community/Outpatients.
  • Have completed a rotation in the area they are applying to be core (or equivalent area).
  • Working with a wide range of professionals including medical and management colleagues.
  • Insight into clinical speciality.
  • Insight into current issues in midwifery/professional issues.

Qualifications:

  • Degree or equivalent.
  • Live NMC Registered Midwife.
  • Successful completion of the LTHT Midwifery Preceptorship program (or equivalent).
  • Practice Assessor Qualification or willingness to undergo training.
  • Teaching/assessing qualification.
  • Non Medical Prescriber.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Able to communicate effectively within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Able to teach, supervise and assess qualified and unqualified staff.
  • Be prepared to maintain midwifery skills across all areas for the service.
