Main duties of the job
The appointee will have specialist experience in GI pathology and may also undertake specialist liver work. This is a full‑time (10 PA) replacement consultant post within the Pathology Clinical Support Unit to support pathology services for the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT) and the region. The department delivers a sub‑specialised service tailored to a tertiary centre, using Royal College of Pathologists guidelines to achieve full staffing and equitable workload distribution. If unable to work full time, a personal modification will be discussed with the Trust.

Job responsibilities
The GI pathology service currently comprises 10 substantive consultants working variable time, covering a broad workload from complex endoscopic polyp resections to multi‑visceral pelvic exenteration surgery. It supports three MDTs including regional services for advanced colorectal, anal and upper GI cancers and a gastroenterology clinic‑pathological correlation meeting. Leeds is a regional tertiary unit for liver surgery and a major liver transplant centre. Liver pathology includes medical (native and transplant) and tumour pathology, with biopsy work and resections. The unit provides an urgent biopsy service and routine reporting, with weekly meetings and an active hepatobiliary cancer MDT. LTHT hosts the West Yorkshire Cellular Pathology Genomic Centre and the central laboratory for the North East and Yorkshire Genomic Laboratory hub, offering state‑of‑the‑art genomic testing, IHC and FISH. The service is linked to the University of Leeds GI Pathology group and the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre, providing academic opportunities and teaching roles. Somatic digital scanning allows home working for part of the time.
Qualifications
- FRCPath (or equivalent)
- Registered on the Specialist Register or within six months of CCT at interview time if in training; all other doctors must be on the Specialist Register
Experience
- Specialist GI pathology experience
- Experience in regional or national referral services and multidisciplinary teams
Considerations
