Required to fill this replacement post within the Diabetes and Endocrinology Department at the St James's University Hospital. Are you looking for a challenging and rewarding opportunity to contribute to a leading tertiary centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology? Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking committed and forward-thinking Consultants in Diabetes and Endocrinology to join our friendly, expert team. As part of a department that provides specialist and regional services to a population far beyond Leeds, you will play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality care across a range of complex conditions.

Based at the Leeds Centre for Diabetes & Endocrinology, you will also have the chance to contribute to innovative research and education in one of the largest training departments in the country. The department is renowned for its research excellence and strong links to the University of Leeds, providing an ideal environment for consultants interested in clinical or translational research. With a multidisciplinary approach to care, you will collaborate across specialties, including close links to excellent regional centres of neurosurgery, endocrine surgery, cancer care, antenatal medicine, vascular surgery, and genetics. The department is also dedicated to career development, providing mentoring and support for those who wish to lead or innovate in clinical care, research, or teaching.

Main duties of the job situated in the vibrant city of Leeds, this role offers an excellent work-life balance with access to cultural amenities, excellent schools, and proximity to the beautiful Yorkshire countryside. The successful applicant should possess MRCP (or equivalent) and should be included on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview, if currently within a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist Register. Applicants should have established skills in Diabetes and Endocrinology and its related specialties including General Internal Medicine. A strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and a research interest is desirable. Consideration will be given to applicants who wish to work full or part-time and those wishing to job share.

If shortlisted, you will be required to give a 10-minute presentation on: Your Role and Ideas for Shaping a Patient-Centred Diabetes and Endocrinology Service Fit for the Next Decade. INTERVIEWS WILL BE HELD: Friday 20 March 2026.

Job responsibilities in relation to this post, the Endocrinology department delivers endocrinology services across Leeds and Yorkshire region. The Diabetes service is part of the Diabetes Leeds partnership which provides high-quality care for people living with diabetes within Leeds. Our Diabetes Centre is at the St James's University Hospital site and the diabetes service also has a developing outreach service within Leeds Community Healthcare. Collectively, the services currently deliver around 26,000 outpatient appointments per year with an active caseload of approximately 16,000 patients. Outpatient clinics are usually between 7-12 patients per clinic and ward work covers approximately 30 patients.

Objectives of the post include:

  • To assist in the provision of multi-disciplinary out-patient services/clinics in Diabetes and Endocrinology, ensuring we meet our objectives of a responsive, patient-centred, and high-quality service.
  • To contribute to the development and modernisation of Diabetes and Endocrine services with the aim of improving capacity and quality of services to both the local Leeds and regional populations.
  • To develop an area of sub-specialty within Diabetes and Endocrinology that interdigitates with the activities of the current Consultants, service demand and increases availability of specialist care to our patients.
  • To contribute to the research agenda of the Diabetes and Endocrinology department, as well as developing independent areas of research with the sub-specialty area.
  • To promote patient and public involvement within the services provided by the department, including involvement with local and national endocrine patient support groups.

The successful candidate will be one of the team looking after General Medical in-patients under the care of the diabetes and endocrinology team, including on-call cover. This will involve working patterns to ensure ward continuity, potentially including ward-blocks with annualised hours/time off in lieu. This includes both out-of-hours cover in addition to post-take ward rounds during normal working hours.

To contribute to the out-of-hours provision of acute medicine on a rota alongside consultant colleagues from acute and respiratory medicine.

To participate in the education, training, and supervision of staff of all grades and disciplines, including contributing to the design of programs and logistics of local and regional diabetes and endocrinology training meetings. The precise duties and responsibilities of the post may be varied depending on circumstances and subject to negotiation with the Lead Clinician and Clinical Director.

Person Specification Experience must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in Diabetes, Endocrinology, General Internal Medicine and relevant sub-specialities. Specifically, must demonstrate higher specialist training in Diabetes, Endocrinology and General Internal Medicine. Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.

Qualifications hold full GMC Registration with a license to practice. YOUR GMC NUMBER MUST BE CLEARLY STATED IN YOUR APPLICATION FORM. Eligibility to work in the UK. Is up to date and fit to practise safely.

Management, Interpersonal Skills & Other Criteria understanding of current issues in the NHS. Well organised and skilled in good time management. Effective interpersonal skills. Demonstrate ability to relate to and work within a team. Hold full GMC Registration with a license to practice. Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via: CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview). Portfolio Pathway (or) international applicants should comply with the GMC specialty registration process. Portfolio Pathway applicants must be on the relevant Specialist Register at the time of application. Attendance at recognised management course.

Training, Research, Teaching & Audit should have completed a recognised training programme in Diabetes, Endocrinology and General Medicine. Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research. Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors. Experience of participation in regular clinical audit. Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff. Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops.
