Consultant in Dermatology (Laser) in Leeds

Required to fill this new post within The Leeds Centre for Dermatology at Chapel Allerton Hospital. This is a substantive 10PA appointment for a Consultant Dermatologist, available from March 2026. The Leeds Centre for Dermatology is internationally renowned for its clinical and academic excellence. In addition to general adult dermatology, the department provides specific expertise at a tertiary level in connective tissue disease, complex medical dermatology, genital disorders, laser dermatology, photobiology, contact allergy, dermatological surgery including Mohs surgery, melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer, paediatric dermatology and clinical trials.

The post-holder will become a key senior member of the dermatology team with clinical work primarily comprising specialist laser dermatology, adult general dermatology, skin cancer services and dermatological surgery. The post will be based at Chapel Allerton Hospital with clinics at St James's Hospital and Wharfedale Hospital as well as advisory participation in the acute dermatology on-call rota covering the whole Trust. There may be opportunity to explore clinical leadership roles within the department.

Main duties of the job:

• The successful applicant should possess MRCP (or equivalent) and should be included on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview, if currently within a training programme within the UK.
• In accordance with the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist Register.
• The applicant must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all aspects of dermatology including specific experience in the use of dermatological lasers, acute presentations (including acute paediatric dermatology presentations), skin cancer diagnosis and treatment.
• A strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and a research interest is desirable.
• Consideration will be given to applicants who wish to work full or part time and those wishing to job share.

If shortlisted, you will be required to give a 10-minute presentation on: Discuss the use of dermatological lasers in the treatment of inflammatory and infective skin conditions as an adjunct or alternative to standard medical treatments.

Job responsibilities:

In relation to this post, within the Leeds Centre for Dermatology, principally based at Chapel Allerton Hospital, offers the successful candidate the opportunity to join a dynamic and innovative department, primarily within the laser dermatology team which currently comprises 2 consultant roles and a team of clinical laser practitioners. The role will also involve working within the world recognised skin cancer unit which hosts the Regional Specialist MDT for Non-Melan Skin Cancer, Melanoma and Cutaneous Lymphoma. There are also close working relationships with the Head and Neck MDT and the Sarcoma MDT. The post holder will be a member of the non-melanoma MDT. In addition to activity in laser dermatology and skin cancer, the role involves providing clinics in adult general dermatology with an opportunity for further sub-specialisation depending on individual skill set and experience.

Objectives of the post:

• To contribute to and enhance the provision of the laser dermatology service.
• To enhance the current provision of rapid access diagnostic skin cancer clinics and enable the Trust to meet agreed levels of activity and access targets.
• To enhance the current provision of skin cancer surgery.
• To contribute to the provision of a comprehensive skin cancer multidisciplinary team.
• To contribute to enhancing the current provision for adult general dermatology services.

Person Specification:

• Hold full GMC Registration with a license to practice. YOUR GMC NUMBER MUST BE CLEARLY STATED IN YOUR APPLICATION.
• Eligibility to work in the UK.
• Is up to date and fit to practise safely.
• Higher degree e.g., MD/PhD relevant to the subspecialty.

Experience:

• Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all aspects of dermatology including acute presentations (including acute paediatric conditions), skin cancer diagnosis and treatment.
• Specifically, they must demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in laser dermatology including the use of vascular, ablative, pigment and hair removal lasers as well as a high level of competence in dermatological surgery.
• Experience in teledermatology and advice and guidance.
• Experience in complex surgical reconstruction such as skin flaps and grafts.

Training, Research, Teaching & Audit:

• Should have completed a recognised training programme in Dermatology and have either a certificate of completion of training (CCST or CCT) or be expected to receive this within the next 6 months or have equivalent experience such that they are on the specialist register.
• Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research.
• Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.
• Experience of participation in regular clinical audit.
• Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff.
• Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops.

• Attendance at recognised management course.
