An exciting opportunity has emerged to join the Medicines Management and Pharmacy Services department as the Clinical Pharmacy Team Leader for Oncology, based at the renowned Leeds Cancer Centre in Bexley Wing at St James's University Hospital.

Main duties of the job

  • Oversee a dynamic and evolving workforce who champion excellence in clinical practice while managing diverse portfolios, spanning specialist disease groups and wider pharmacy responsibilities.
  • Accountable for the service delivery of your team across a range of pharmacy performance indicators and involved in finance, governance and therapeutic pathway decisions.
  • Work collaboratively with the Clinical Pharmacy Team Leader for Haematology, the Consultant Pharmacist for Cancer Services, Associate Lead Clinicians for Preparative Services and Lead Pharmacy Technician for Cancer Services to ensure oncology pharmacy services remain safe, efficient, effective and compassionate.

About us

Medicines Management and Pharmacy Services (MMPS) at LTHT is a large and vibrant department with over 750 staff working across multiple sites. You will work closely with senior leaders and other service leads to take pharmacy forward into the future, linking the needs of the oncology service to the broader needs of medicines safety and pathway delivery. The Leeds Cancer Centre is one of the UK's leading tertiary specialist centres, caring for patients across Leeds and the wider Yorkshire region, supporting individuals with a broad spectrum of oncological conditions. The chemotherapy and immunotherapy service treats over 5,000 patients annually. Our oncology pharmacists play a pivotal role within a highly skilled multidisciplinary team, guiding patients through every stage of their treatment journey.

Job responsibilities

  • Manage a team of pharmacists delivering specialist clinical pharmacy services to specified Clinical Service/Support Units (CSUs) within the Trust.
  • Be the first point of contact, and support for the CSUs, on all matters relating to pharmacy.
  • Provide expert opinion, both within and outside pharmacy, to ensure the safe and effective delivery of drug therapy to defined clinical areas.
  • Provide pharmaceutical professional leadership for defined clinical areas by liaison with pharmacy operational services and key members of the CSU.
  • Be responsible for professional leadership for specified area of Trust e.g. locality hospital.
  • Perform the role of a lead clinical pharmacist to a defined clinical area, ensuring medicines are used appropriately, safely, and cost-effectively in accordance with Trust policy, standard operating procedures and medicine legislation.
  • Determine how the outcomes are best achieved in specific circumstances.
  • Manage a team of specialist pharmacists providing clinical pharmacy services to the defined clinical areas and CSUs.
  • Responsible for the provision of information to the CSUs regarding clinical and financial governance, and issues around service delivery and future developments.
  • Coordinate training for pharmacists and other healthcare professionals on aspects of drug use within defined clinical specialities.
  • Provide a minimum of at least one session of professional supervisory cover in the dispensary, aseptic dispensary, Medicines Information Department or other related activity.
  • Work evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays on a rotational basis.
  • Act as the responsible pharmacist in line with local procedures.

Person Specification

  • Masters qualification in Pharmacy (4 years), or equivalent qualification, plus 1 year pre-registration training.
  • Member of the General Pharmaceutical Council.
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy or equivalent experience or qualification.
  • Independent pharmacist prescriber.

Experience

  • Significant post registration experience as a practising clinical pharmacist, including two years as a specialist pharmacist in an area relevant to the post.
  • Experience of dealing with a wide variety and grade of hospital staff on a regular and ongoing basis, including senior medical and managerial staff.
  • Proven ability to have successfully dealt with highly complex clinical and managerial issues.
  • Experience of line management and supervision of staff.

  • Have developed negotiating and persuasive skills when interacting with other clinical team members, hospital managers, patients and relatives.
