The Clinical Coding Department is looking for new Clinical Coders to join our hybrid team. We are a modern forward-thinking department looking for qualified clinical coders or open-minded enthusiastic people who are willing to undertake our 3-year Clinical Coding Training plan. The post holder will become a key member of the department, responsible for the daily management of their job plan, ensuring the delivery to the highest of standards whilst meeting the national targets and standards whilst working mostly independently from home.
Our Clinical Coding Department delivers coding complete for over 250,000 episodes per year. We have 40.16 WTE Clinical Coders with 62% AAC qualified and the remaining working towards their qualification. Our Trust treats a wide range of complex/regional patients so our work is interesting and varied. We are looking for someone with an understanding of the key principles of clinical coding with the ability to continuously improve performance.
Main duties of the jobClinical Coders analyse clinical documentation and accurately record information about each patient's diagnosis and procedures for each hospital admitted attendance. This data is used to analyse hospital activity and outcomes at a national and local level. To do this, Clinical Coders must have a substantial knowledge of human anatomy, diseases and the surgical techniques used by clinicians in many different specialties. They must have an excellent understanding of the over 400 coding standards and data collection rules. Prior experience of coding is desirable but not essential; full in-house training will be provided with our training progression plan. Those with no prior experience of coding can expect to learn the role over the course of three years, prior to sitting the National Clinical Coding Qualification to achieve full accreditation.
About usThe Clinical Coding Department is a large and diverse team with a strong work ethic and high standards. The team work mainly from home barring a few exceptions by choice. This is because of our Trust EPR and scanning service enables our team to code digitally. We ask that the teams attend the LTHT site a minimum of four times per year or for business need such as certain training, equipment failure and operational requirements. This will ensure that staff can build and maintain relationships with other team members. As a department we rotate the clinical coders assigned job plans every six months to ensure our clinical coders maintain their skill mix. The department has a training and audit function with 3 auditors, a trainer and an assistant trainer. This is to ensure the continued improvements in the depth and quality of our clinical coding as well as support the trainees undertaking our annex 21 training plan for the ACC qualification.

- ACC Qualification
- If ACC Qualified: Significant experience as a clinical coder gained in an acute trust setting with experience of coding multiple specialties and a varied complexity of case load
- Experience of working with clinicians and senior managers specifically around clinical engagement and education
- Worked with stakeholders/clients/customers to resolve problems
- Expert knowledge of the structures and application of clinical languages ICD10, OPCS and other clinical terms
- Enhanced knowledge of medical and clinical terminology
- Excellent knowledge of hospital information systems
- Sound knowledge of payment by results (PbR) and Healthcare Resource Groups (HRG)
- Worked independently, managing/assigning their own workload/Working as part of a team.
- Previous use of Microsoft packages including Excel, Teams and Outlook
- Excellent verbal and written communication and the ability to communicate the same message to staff at various levels
- A confident clinical coder who understands the application of national coding rules and who can demonstrate a sound knowledge of this through performance in departmental staff audits
- Technical understanding and the ability to use a variety of Microsoft packages particularly Ms Word for report writing and Ms Excel for graphs and other trend charts
- Experience coding hospital spells using ICD-10 and OPCS-4 classifications in line with NHS data standards
- Worked as a hospital coder covering at least four different hospital specialities (e.g., Oncology, Obstetrics, Trauma, Surgery)
- Worked in a role with research, training or audit elements
- Worked in a hospital administration role
- Worked in a role in which reading and understanding medical notes was a key element
