Basic Grade Clinical Perfusionist (XR07) in Leeds

An excellent opportunity has arisen to appoint a Basic Grade Clinical Perfusionist to join our team at Leeds General Infirmary. Due to continuous workforce planning, we are looking to appoint an enthusiastic, self-motivated accredited perfusionist. We provide a diverse range of cardiac surgery from neonatal to adult patients, including ECMO, intra-aortic balloon pumping and intra-operative cell salvage. You can expect to find a supportive and forward-thinking department, keen on delivering the highest standards of healthcare.

The role is a permanent position. The successful applicant will need to participate in the 24-hour on-call. You must be registered with the College of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland.

Main duties of the job include:

• Take delegated responsibility for the delivery of a highly specialist perfusion service, ensuring the service is effective and well-coordinated.
• Offer and undertake a range of highly specialised perfusion techniques during routine and emergency cardiopulmonary bypass.
• Assess patients' relevant medical history, pathology and diagnosis and make appropriate decisions concerning conduct of cardiopulmonary bypass procedures.
• Advise clinicians on the suitability of equipment and suggest appropriate courses of action.
• Set up, prime and run the cardiopulmonary bypass machine to maintain life support for the period of cardiopulmonary bypass.
• Regularly undertake bypass initiation and termination which requires a high level of hand-eye and sensory coordination.
• Take personal responsibility for monitoring and making fine adjustments to patient parameters on the bypass machine.
• Sample, analyse and interpret arterial/venous blood gases and patient coagulation status.
• Administer drugs as clinically indicated.
• Monitor a wide range of highly complex clinical information and take appropriate autonomous action.
• Manipulate the patient's cardiovascular system whilst on cardiopulmonary bypass.
• Provide one-to-one care to acutely ill children with life-threatening conditions.
• Ensure quality control, calibration, cleaning, maintenance and safe use of medical equipment in Clinical Perfusion.
• Participate fully in the Clinical Perfusion 24hr on-call cover.

Managerial responsibilities include:

• Liaising with other members of the surgical, anaesthetic and nursing teams.
• Managing and prioritising own caseload/workload independently.
• Supervision of students and assisting Senior Clinical Perfusionist with training activity.
• Completing a training record and casebook.
• Respecting confidentiality of all matters relating to colleagues' employment.
• Assisting with stock rotation and maintenance of stock levels.

Educational and training responsibilities include:

• Assisting with the organization and implementation of education and training programmes.
• Providing teaching to doctors, nurses and other Allied health professionals.
• Encouraging and supporting staff development and training.
• Attending post-graduate courses, seminars and conferences for continual professional development.

Research and development responsibilities include:

• Assisting with the development of specialised techniques and protocols.
• Participating in developing and implementing protocols and procedures.
• Evaluating, researching and auditing perfusion equipment testing.

Communication skills required:

• Communicate effectively as a core member of the cardiothoracic surgical team.
• Relay sensitive information to ensure appropriate continuation of care.
• Participate in discussions with clinicians to devise appropriate care pathways.

Person Specification:

• Able to work in high-pressure clinical situations.
• Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Evidence of continuing professional development.

Qualifications required:

• Accreditation of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland.
• Registration with the College of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland.
• MSc Clinical Perfusion.
