Main duties of the job
You will join the department of clinical neurophysiology as an apprentice, spending the majority of your time gaining hands‑on clinical experience whilst working towards a BSC (Hons) Healthcare science (Neurophysiology) level 6 degree with the University of the West of England (UWE) Bristol. The programme runs for 3 years and is delivered mainly through distance learning with block‑release residential weeks at UWE Bristol. You will be paid an NHS salary throughout under Annex 21 terms. On successful completion of the BSc and clinical competency assessments you will be eligible to apply for a qualified Band 5 health‑science practitioner post, subject to vacancies within the department.
Job responsibilities
- Work within a professional team of medical staff, physiologists, clinical support workers and administration staff.
- Assist with clinical neurophysiology procedures, including ECG, EEG, EMG and other diagnostic tests.
- Record, interpret and report clinical data under supervision.
- Maintain accurate patient records and comply with confidentiality and data‑protection standards.
- Participate in patient assessment, treatment and follow‑up as part of the team.
- Manage own learning plan and clinical workload as part of the apprenticeship programme.
Qualifications
- GCSE grade C/4 or above in English Language and Mathematics (Functional Skills Level 2 accepted).
- A‑level grade C or above in at least one of: Biology, Applied Biology, Human Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Health and Social Care, Mathematics, Physical Education, Physics, Psychology, Applied Science, Science in Society, Sport and Physical Education, Sports Studies. (Equivalent qualifications or relevant work experience may be considered by UWE Bristol).
- Eligibility to work in the United Kingdom.
- Not enrolled on any other apprenticeship or full‑time education programme at the time of starting.
Experience
Relevant work or voluntary experience in a healthcare setting is advantageous but not mandatory.
